Area roundup: GU men edged by Lions on soccer field
The Gonzaga men’s soccer team jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but Loyola Marymount scored three unanswered goals for a 3-2 victory in a West Coast Conference match in Spokane on Sunday.
Nick Hamer’s first career goal and Collin Harrison’s second of the season gave the Bulldogs (4-14, 1-10 WCC) a 2-0 lead before the Lions scored twice in 48 seconds to tie the match before halftime. LMU scored the game-winner in the 76th minute to send Gonzaga to its sixth straight loss.
Seniors Stefan Eysteinsson, Philippe Garre, Harrison, Nick Love, Christian Seon and Zach Smith were honored before their final home match.
• Washington tied the game with 1:27 in regulation and won three minutes into overtime, beating San Diego State 2-1 in Pac-10 play in Seattle.
Matt Van Houten scored the equalizer for the Huskies (10-6-1, 4-5 Pac-10) and Quinton Beasley netted the winner.
Women’s basketball
Sage Romberg’s jumper with 9 seconds left gave Washington State a 64-63 exhibition victory over Lewis-Clark State in Pullman. Romberg also blocked a field-goal attempt by Lauren Daling as time expired.
Jazmine Perkins led the Cougars with 15 points.
• Brianne Ryan scored 13 points and Kyla Evans added 11 as Eastern Washington beat Simon Fraser 76-63 in an exhibition in Cheney. Julie Piper added 10 points for the Eagles.
Women’s golf
Washington State fired a final-round 38-over 322 and finished with a three-day total of 947, good for 21st place at the Pac-10-SEC Challenge in Stanford, Calif. UCLA shot a 4-over 856 to win the tournament.
Kristen Allard was the top-finishing Cougar, tying for 85th place with a three-day total of 22-over 235.
Junior hockey
The Spokane Braves’ comeback attempt fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in Spokane.
A.J. King’s goal put the Braves (12-12) ahead in the first period before the Nitehawks scored the next four goals to take a 4-1 lead. Rance Hughes scored at 7:32 of the third period and Uriah Machuga scored a shorthanded goal just over 2 minutes later to complete the scoring.
