Area roundup: Balanced NIC Cardinals improve mark to 7-0

Forward Jake Owsley led five players in double figures with 18 points Tuesday as North Idaho College improved to 7-0 with a 96-73 nonconference men’s basketball win over host Salish Kootenai at Pablo, Mont.

Owsley shot 8 for 10 from the floor while coming off the bench. Tyrone White added 17 points and Nick Fromm scored 16.

Cardinals point guard Michael Hale III had a game-high seven assists.

NIC outrebounded the Bison 48-35 with six players grabbing four or five apiece.

Girls basketball

Josie Tennison hit 4 of 6 from the floor and combined with Tori Davenport on 9-for-9 free-throw shooting as Post Falls (2-0) posted a 49-42 win at Sandpoint (1-2) in a nonleaguer. … Elsewhere, Cassie Thompson scored 31 points, hitting 14 of 24 field goals, and added 11 rebounds as host Timberlake (2-0) rolled to a 69-13 win over Wallace (2-1). Timberlake’s Kara Wenstrom added seven assists and 14 points on nine shots. … Nikki Redinger scored 24 points, hitting 8 of 10 field goals and 6 of 7 free throws, as Moscow (1-1) used a 13-2 first-quarter run to cruise to a 71-36 win at Bonners Ferry (0-1). Moscow’s Abi Quinnett hit 6 of 8 from the floor. … Jenna Davis scored 16 points, hitting 6 of 7 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws, and added seven rebounds as host Lakeland (1-1) overcame a 9-1 deficit for a 57-34 win over Priest River (0-1) at Rathdrum. Jax Babor added seven steals and 10 points for the Hawks. Holly Hirst led the Spartans with 12 points.

Football

Whitworth seniors Adam Anderson and Zack Clow repeated as first-team choices on the All-Northwest Conference team.

Anderson, a running back from Elk, Wash., rushed for 1,015 yards to make the first team for the third time. Clow averaged 35.6 yards per punt, with a long of 65 yards.

The Pirates’ second-team picks were junior defensive tackle Danny Engel, senior defensive end Jeff Erlenmeyer, senior linebacker Paul Werhane, junior defensive back Cailen Thomason and junior wide receiver Dale Entel (Clarkston). Senior linebacker Layton Brown, senior defensive back Derek Stottlemyer and junior center Emilio Sulpizio (Mead High) were honorable mention.

Anderson was also named NWC offensive player of the week after running for six touchdowns last Saturday against Puget Sound.

Swimming

Freshman Aaron Vaccaro and sophomore Abby Pavelko, both of whom won all four of their individual events last weekend for Whitworth, were named NWC athletes of the week.
