In brief: Gay’s shot beats buzzer, visiting Heat
NBA: Rudy Gay hit a fadeaway jumper over LeBron James at the buzzer, and the Memphis Grizzlies took advantage of Dwyane Wade’s absence to beat the Miami Heat 97-95 on Saturday night in Memphis, Tenn.
James tied it for the 12th time, dunking off Eddie House’s steal of Gay with 5.5 seconds left. Gay came back with the winning 13-foot jumper. Officials reviewed the shot, then ruled it beat the clock.
James finished with 29 points, and House had a season-high 20 as the Heat lost for the first time in four games.
Zach Randolph had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies.
Heat forward Udonis Haslem was carried off the court after colliding with Randolph and spraining his left foot in the third quarter.
X-rays were negative and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Haslem will be re-evaluated today in Miami.
• Miles helps Jazz rally past Trail Blazers: C.J. Miles had 25 points, hitting five 3-pointers during an electric fourth quarter comeback, and the visiting Utah Jazz beat the Portland Trail Blazers, 103-94.
Al Jefferson had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Paul Millsap added 15 points for the Jazz. LaMarcus Aldridge led the Blazers with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
• Nowitzki, Mavs get past Hawks: Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points, Jason Terry added 15 and the Dallas Mavericks snapped a two-game skid with a 98-93 victory over the host Atlanta Hawks.
Hawks guard Joe Johnson misfired on a 3-point attempt that would’ve forced a tie with 2.5 seconds remaining. Al Horford finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds for the Hawks.
• Howard, Nelson lead Magic over Pacers: Jameer Nelson converted a go-ahead three-point play with 33 second left, leading Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic to a 90-86 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.
Howard led Orlando with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Roy Hibbert had 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace Indiana.
• Knicks hand Clippers ninth straight loss: Amare Stoudemire had 39 points and 11 rebounds, Danilo Gallinari scored 17 of his career high-tying 31 points in the fourth quarter, and the visiting New York Knicks completed a three-game California sweep with a 124-115 victory over the league-worst Los Angeles Clippers. Rookie Blake Griffin had career highs of 44 points and seven assists while pulling down 15 rebounds for the 1-13 Clippers.
Flyers power past Caps in shootout
NHL: Danny Briere scored the only goal in the shootout, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped all three Washington attempts and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the host Capitals, 5-4.
Bobrovsky blocked Nicklas Backstrom’s drive, gloved Alex Ovechkin’s shot and slid as Alexander Semin’s try glanced off the left post. Briere put the puck between Michal Neuvirth’s pads.
Philadelphia went ahead 4-3 with 6:07 remaining on Andreas Nodl’s goal, but Eric Fehr scored on a power play with 38.8 seconds left in regulation.
• Porter’s SO goal lifts Avalanche over Stars: Kevin Porter scored in the fifth round of the shootout, and the visiting Colorado Avalanche recovered after wasting a three-goal lead to beat the Dallas Stars 4-3.
Chris Stewart had a goal in the second round for Colorado, but Dallas’ Mike Ribeiro countered in the third. Porter won it with a shot that beat Kari Lehtonen to the stick side.
• Predators beat Hurricanes in shootout: Martin Erat and Cal O’Reilly scored in the shootout to push the Nashville Predators to a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C. After O’Reilly matched Carolina’s Jeff Skinner in the first round, each team failed on its second opportunity. Patrick O’Sullivan then missed for the Hurricanes, setting up Erat’s winner.
• Nash helps Blue Jackets beat Sharks: Rick Nash scored three goals, Mathieu Garon recorded his third shutout in four games, and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the San Jose Sharks 3-0 in San Jose, Calif. Columbus earned its seventh road victory in eight games.
Morgan fires late U.S. goal to beat Italy
Miscellany: At Padua, Italy, Alex Morgan came off the bench and scored in the fourth minute of added time to give the U.S. women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Italy in the first leg of a playoff to determine the final spot for the World Cup.
The top-ranked Americans need to beat the 11th-ranked Italians in the two-match total-goals series to gain the final berth in the 16-team World Cup, which begins June 26 in Germany. The teams will play again next Saturday near Chicago in Bridgeview, Ill.
• Mallinger still leads Pebble Beach Invitational: John Mallinger shot a 2-under at Del Monte to maintain a one-stroke lead over Russ Cochran in the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Invitational.
Mallinger finished the third round at 11-under 205. Cochran was second after a 70 at Spyglass Hill. Annika Sorenstam, competing for one of the few times since her 2008 retirement, was seven strokes back after a 71 at Pebble Beach.
• Verner, Ando win Cup of Russia figure skating event: Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic outskated Patrick Chan of Canada and American Jeremy Abbott to win the Cup of Russia Grand Prix figure skating competition in Moscow.
Miki Ando of Japan gritted her way through serious back pain to win the women’s gold, soaring past Akiko Suzuki (silver) and American Ashley Wagner (bronze).
• Brennan now in stable condition after crash: Former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan remains hospitalized after he was hurt in a two-car crash on Hawaii’s Big Island.
Officials at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu said the 27-year-old Brennan is in stable condition. Police said Brennan was a passenger in an SUV that crossed a highway centerline and collided head-on with a sedan.
• Gourmet Dinner wins at Delta Downs: Gourmet Dinner, a 20-1 long shot, raced past the field down the stretch to win the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot in Vinton, La.
Gourmet Dinner won the 1 1/16-mile graded race for 2-year-olds in 1:45.23. Decisive Moment, another long shot at 45-1, finished two lengths back in second and Rush Now grabbed third.
