Signed The Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday completed their starting rotation for 2011 by agreeing to a deal with right-hander Jon Garland. The $5 million, one-year contract includes an $11 million option for the 2012 season.

Returning Golden State Warriors forward David Lee has been cleared to rejoin the team after two elbow operations. The Warriors said Lee worked out in Oakland, Calif., and passed an examination by the team’s physician.

Introduced The Detroit Tigers introduced Victor Martinez, after completing a four-year contract with the 31-year-old switch-hitter. The Tigers’ top priority this offseason was to add another big bat, so Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera helped recruit his fellow Venezuelan. Martinez hit .302 with 20 home runs and 79 RBIs in 127 games with Boston last season.

Submitted Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has submitted his official defense for a failed doping test during this year’s Tour, giving the Spanish cycling federation documents he claims will show contaminated meat was to blame. The 27-year-old Spanish cyclist risks losing this year’s Tour title and could face a two-year ban if found guilty of using clenbuterol, a banned muscle-building and weight-loss steroid.

Attacked Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone suffered a minor head injury when he was attacked outside his London office this week and robbed of jewelry worth $314,000. The 80-year-old Ecclestone was treated at a hospital after being punched and kicked by four men following his arrival at the offices of Formula One Holdings on Wednesday night, London police said.

Upgraded Purdue women’s basketball player Drey Mingo remains hospitalized with bacterial meningitis, but her condition has been upgraded to fair in West Lafayette, Ind. She was admitted earlier in the week in critical condition with inflamed membranes around the brain and spine.

Accepted Olympic and world champion sprinter Shelly Ann Fraser is taking responsibility for not listing a banned painkiller that she took to relieve a toothache, resulting in a six-month ban. The Jamaican tested positive for oxycodone at a meet May 23 in Shanghai. She said she took the painkiller after undergoing a dental procedure.
