The project

• What: The U.S. exposed 696 men and women in Guatemala to syphilis, or in some cases gonorrhea.

• When: 1946 to 1948

• How: Through jail visits by prostitutes or by deliberately inoculating people.

• Why: To test if penicillin could prevent sexually transmitted infections.
