The project

What: The U.S. exposed 696 men and women in Guatemala to syphilis, or in some cases gonorrhea.

When: 1946 to 1948

How: Through jail visits by prostitutes or by deliberately inoculating people.

Why: To test if penicillin could prevent sexually transmitted infections.
