Whits move into first

Kaimi Rocha finished with 11 kills and 10 digs and Whitworth (14-6, 11-2) moved into a tie for first place with a sweep against Pacific (4-17, 3-10) in Northwest Conference volleyball action in Spokane.

The Pirates, who moved atop the standings with Puget Sound, held the Boxers to a negative hitting percentage, forcing 28 errors while the Boxers managed just 27 kills.

• Alex Jupiter tallied 12 kills in 22 attempts and Mead grad Alexis Olgard added seven kills as No. 8 USC (18-3, 7-3) registered eight team blocks in its 25-14, 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Pac-10 foe Washington State (6-14, 0-10) in Los Angeles.

• Rachael Kidder had 24 kills and No. 11 UCLA (16-5, 6-4) dropped No. 7 Washington (17-4, 6-4) 3-2 in Pac-10 play in Los Angeles.

• Shelby Puckett and Alysha Cook combined for 22 kills and Lindsey Petroni added a match-high 15 digs as Eastern Washington (6-15, 5-6) pulled within a match of .500 in Big Sky Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Montana State (10-13, 3-7) in Cheney.

• Erika Charry finished with 16 kills and No. 18 Salt Lake CC (24-5, 4-4) handed No. 6 North Idaho (22-6, 8-1) its first SWAC loss of the season, 3-1 in Salt Lake City.

Women’s soccer

Karter Haug scored a tiebreaking goal in the 83rd minute to lift No. 23 USC (10-4-3, 3-2-1) over Washington State (6-12, 1-6) in Los Angeles. Ali Fenter gave WSU an early lead with a goal in the 29th minute.

• Courtney Watson’s header in the 66th minute proved to be the only goal of the match and Montana (3-13-3, 2-4-1) ended Eastern Washington’s (2-14-1, 2-5) season with a loss, 1-0 in Big Sky action in Cheney.

• Alex Webber scored in the 17th minute and the goal held up as Washington (11-6-1, 4-3) shut out UCLA (9-6-1, 2-3) 1-0 in Pac-10 play in Los Angeles.

Men’s soccer

Jordan Grider scored the go-ahead goal in the 90th minute and Dylan Leslie added a pair of assists as Saint Mary’s (8-5-1, 4-3) edged Gonzaga (4-11, 1-7) 2-1 in West Coast Conference play in Moraga, Calif.

• Matt Van Houten scored in the 84th minute, lifting Washington (9-4-1, 3-3) to a 1-0 victory over Stanford (7-9, 3-5) in Pac-10 action in Stanford, Calif.

Wrestling

Sophomore Kyle McCrite (125 pounds) won by 17-0 technical fall against Chase Dirden and his classmate Jesse Nielsen (174 pounds) recorded a fall in 3:23 against Jared Miller as North Idaho won in its season opener, 30-12 against Montana State-Northern in Havre, Mont.

Rowing

Led by its Varsity 8 team, the Gonzaga men defeated Washington State – for the second consecutive week – at the Head of the Snake Regatta in Pullman.

The Bulldogs finished in 16:15.07, beating the Cougars by 20.03 seconds.

In the women’s flight, Washington State had its top three teams finish in the top three against GU, led by the first Varsity 8, which finished in a time of 17:46.24.

Hockey

Rance Hughes scored a power-play goal with 10:26 left in the game to lift the Spokane Braves (11-9 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League) to a 4-3 win over Grand Forks (2-15) in Grand Forks, British Columbia.
