Colfax wants another title shot

The way Colfax football coach Mike Morgan sees it, his team has some unfinished business.

Colfax, which was ranked No. 1 most of the season, fell 32-24 to Adna in the State 2B championship game last December in a game the Bulldogs very well could have won.

“They feel like they have something to atone for,” Morgan said.

The Bulldogs (13-1) committed four turnovers against Adna. Six starters – all skill players – and 23 lettermen return.

The biggest holes were left on the offensive and defensive lines, where Morgan must replace three all-state selections.

“They were big, strong beefy kids. You don’t replace those kids very easily,” Morgan said. “Every team is different. Like your own children, they come from mom and dad but have different personalities. This team has a different personality. They’re a bunch of seniors and juniors who were involved in the state championship game. They have a strong, burning desire to get back.”

Morgan has the skill players to lead the Bulldogs. Senior Alex Teade, a three-year starter, is back at quarterback and defensive back, senior Tyler McNannay returns at running back and linebacker. Kellen Morgan, a senior, is back at tight end and DB and massive 6-foot-7 and 280-pound senior Tuffy Hickman is back at offensive and defensive line.

Colfax opens at perennial playoff qualifier DeSales of Walla Walla. The Irish (1-0) pulled out a 31-28 win in overtime over La Salle last week.

The Bulldogs beat DeSales twice last year – 33-14 in the regular season and 19-0 in the semifinals.

“They’re as strong as always,” Morgan said of DeSales.

When Colfax dives into league, it will be anything but a cakewalk, Morgan said. He expects challenges from Reardan and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague.

Morgan, who enters his 13th season, is seven wins away from 100.
