Father, son killed in airplane crash
A plane crash south of Coeur d’Alene on Friday killed a father and son from Wyoming.
Craig Dwayne Kestner, 50, and Brock Sterling Kestner, 21, died when their single-engine Cessna 210 crashed about 5:10 p.m. in a wooded area about 10 miles south of Coeur d’Alene near Red Hog Ridge, officials said Saturday.
Sheriff’s officials initially said they believed only one man was aboard the plane, but two victims were discovered upon further investigation.
The men were from Basin, Wyo., where Craig Kestner was president of a construction company.
Their bodies were recovered about 2 p.m. Saturday. Officials said weather and terrain delayed recovery.
The Idaho Bureau of Aeronautics alerted the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department to the crash after the plane’s emergency locator beacon activated Friday.
A Spokane County sheriff’s helicopter helped officials from the Sheriff’s Department and the Mica-Kidd Island Fire District locate the wreckage about 6:30 p.m. Friday.
The crash site is about a mile east of U.S. Highway 95.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were expected to arrive Saturday.
