Briefs: Ishikawa one behind Scott at Bridgestone

Golf: Ryo Ishikawa, the 19-year-old sensation, made six birdies Saturday for a 6-under-par 64 that put him in the final group and only one shot behind Adam Scott in the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Along with a $1.4 million payoff, Ishikawa could become the youngest winner of a PGA Tour event in 100 years.

Scott poured in four birdies on the back nine for a 4-under 66, giving the 31-year-old Australian a shot at his first World Golf Championship.

Scott was at 12-under 198, the lowest 54-hole score at Firestone in 10 years.

Tiger Woods shot a 72 and is 13 shots back.

Piercy breaks course record at Reno-Tahoe Open: Scott Piercy reeled off eight consecutive birdies on the front nine then eagled the 18th to break the course record with an 11-under 61 at the Reno-Tahoe Open in Reno, Nev.

The 32-year-old Las Vegas native parred the first hole and birdied the next eight to make the turn at 8-under 28. That tied both the longest birdie streak and lowest nine holes in relation to par posted on the PGA Tour this year.

Kirk Triplett (former Pullman resident) is tied for 21st at 6 under after shooting a 68. Alex Prugh (Ferris High) shot a 74 and is tied for 57th at 2 under.

Senior, Huston tied for lead at 3M Championship: Peter Senior shot a bogey-free 67 and John Huston birdied No. 18 for a 68 that left them tied for the lead at 12 under after the second round of the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn.

Jay Haas, the co-leader after the opening round, shot a 69 and was one shot back.

Evans beats Ortiz in UFC main event

UFC: Rashad Evans delivered a crushing knee to Tito Ortiz’s chest, then ended the fight with a series of blows to the head to shake off a 14-month layoff and win the main event of UFC 133 in Philadelphia.

Evans won at 4 minutes, 48 seconds into Round 2 via TKO.

Richards-Ross, Taylor shine for U.S.

Track and field: Carmelita Jeter and Walter Dix won the sprints, Sanya Richards-Ross captured the 400 and triple jumper Christian Taylor upset the world champion in a strong showing by Americans at the Crystal Palace Diamond League meet in London.

U.S. champion Taylor recorded a leap of 58-1/4 feet, while Phillips Idowu’s best of 56-0 was only good enough for third behind Tosin Oke of Nigeria.

Firing, lawsuit contribute to USATF expense spike: USA Track and Field spent $2.3 million on administrative costs in 2010, more than double the amount of the previous year, in part because of the lawsuit filed by the CEO it fired.

The federation for the country’s largest summer Olympic sport fired Doug Logan last year and he sued to have the $1.7 million left on his contract paid. An undisclosed settlement was reached.

Wind hampers start of America’s Cup

Sailing: Light wind hampered the start of the America’s Cup World Series in Cascais, Portugal, for the high-tech catamarans.

Conditions in the Atlantic off the Portugal coast initially delayed sailing before organizers decided to abandon the inaugural speed trial event.

Franklin wins 100 free at U.S. nationals

Swimming: Missy Franklin won the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. national championships in Stanford, Calif., defeating a field that included three Olympians with the fifth-fastest time in the world this year.

Franklin, the 16-year-old phenom who won three gold medals at the recent world championships in China, won in 53.63 seconds.

Stepanek advances to Legg Mason final

Tennis: Radek Stepanek reached the finals at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Donald Young.

The 54th-ranked Stepanek will play in his first final of the season against top-seeded Gael Monfils, who beat No. 11 John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8) in the other semifinal.

Zvonareva, Radwanska advance to Carlsbad final: Vera Zvonareva of Russia beat Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Mercury Insurance Open in Carlsbad, Calif.

The top-seeded and third-ranked Zvonareva will play Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the finals. Radwanska beat Andrea Petkovic of Germany, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, in the other semifinal.

Canada beats U.S. in World Cup tuneup

Rugby: Canada’s men’s rugby team rallied in the second half to beat the United States 22-18 in an exhibition tuneup in Toronto for the World Cup.

The World Cup begins next month in New Zealand.

Tizway captures Whitney at Saratoga

Horse racing: Tizway dominated 10 opponents to win the $750,000 Whitney Invitational Handicap and heavily favored Turbulent Descent scored an easy victory in the $250,000 Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Chipshot wins Monmouth Park feature: Chipshot beat Cal Nation by 23/4 lengths in the $75,000 Select Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
