Gray soars up money list

Cheney bareback rider Ryan Gray continued his amazing summer by placing in five rodeos over the weekend, including a pair of titles, to move up to 11th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Associaton standings.

Gray shared titles at the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Kennewick, the big paydays in a $10,685 week. He also placed in Bremerton and Lynden, Wash., and the North Idaho Fair in Coeur d’Alene.

Gray has won more than $60,000 in just over two months since recovering from injuries and is now $12,000 clear of 16th place. The top 15 advance to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, a trip Gray has made six straight years.

Grand Coulee bullrider Shane Proctor was even more dominant. Of the five rodeos he entered over the weekend he won two (the same as Gray) and finished second in Bremerton and Lynden. His five qualified rides averaged 88.5 points with a season-high 93 in California.

His $21,177 in winnings was the most for any cowboy over the weekend, pushing his season total to just shy of $150,000, well more than $50,000 ahead of second place.

The PRCA also pointed out an odd side note: Shawn Proctor (no relation) had a 90-point ride to win the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede in Bremerton – the only rodeo in which Shane Proctor failed to have a qualified ride.
