Preps roundup: Wiley leads Newport past Freeman in OT

Jake Wiley scored a game high 30 points, including eight of Newport’s 11 points in overtime, as the Grizzlies (12-9) eliminated host Freeman (9-12) from postseason play with a 61-54 victory in the first round of the Northeast A District tournament Saturday.

Wiley added 10 rebounds and six blocks for the Grizzlies.

Ben Kuiper paced the Scotties with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, but fouled out in overtime as Freeman managed just four points in the extra period. Newport, which also received 12 points from Jeron Konkright, will play Lakeside at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mead.

IEL 4A

Moscow 73, Sandpoint 50: Josh Helbling finished with 16 points and the host Bears (6-11, 3-1) opened a 21-point lead over the Bulldogs (9-9, 3-1) with a 20-9 run in the third quarter. Blaine Schultz scored 13 points for the Bulldogs, who are now tied atop the league with Moscow with no league games remaining.

Intermountain

Priest River 60, Timberlake 28: Mikey Bach went 8 of 8 from the field and scored a game-high 16 points, Max Salesky added 15 points and the Spartans (13-4, 5-0) put the Tigers (2-15, 0-6) away after the break, outscoring them 24-7 in the third quarter. Eric Holbrook chipped in six points, eight assists and seven rebounds for PR.

Kellogg 54, St. Maries 41: Tyler Morgan notched 12 points and eight rebounds and Ryan Beggerly added eight points with three assists as the host Wildcats (13-4, 6-2) used a 14-2 run in the third quarter to beat the Lumberjacks (13-4, 4-2). The run erased a three-point halftime deficit, giving the Wildcats a nine-point advantage with one quarter to play.

Bi-County 2B

Colfax 47, Liberty 34: Justin Berarducci tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds and the host Bulldogs (18-2, 15-1) built a 19-point lead in the second half to knock off the Lancers (5-14, 4-11). Brandon Gfeller added 13 points for the Bulldogs.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 73, Kettle Falls 47: Dylan Hartz scored 13 points and Traven Smith added 11 points as the visiting Broncos (10-9, 7-8) used big runs at the start of each half to knock off the Bulldogs (1-18, 0-15). LRS outscored the Bulldogs 39-15 combined in the first and third quarters. Luke Beardslee had 14 points for KF.

Reardan 58, St. George’s 53: Chace Bell and Jake Hight combined for 35 points and the Indians (9-10, 8-7) used good free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to hold off the visiting Dragons (9-10, 8-7). Bell led all scorers with 18 points and Hight scored 17.

Davenport 75, Springdale 65: Joey Gunning scored 20 points and four Gorillas (10-9, 7-8) players contributed all but two of their points against the visiting Chargers (7-11, 5-10). Ryan Zeller and Cole Evers each added 19 points and Josh Likkel chipped in 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Gorillas.

Southeast 1B

Rosalia 73, LaCrosse-Washtucna 39: Nathan Richards and D.J. Brown combined for 35 points and the visiting Spartans (19-1, 14-0) finished the regular season with a perfect league record, beating the Tigercats (6-13, 3-11) in their season finale. Jeff Zimmer led the Tigercats with 18 points, but they fell behind 28-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Colton 63, Garfield-Palouse 51: Josh Straughan had 24 points and seven steals, Dustin Patchen added 24 points and 15 rebounds and the visiting Wildcats (13-7, 11-3) finished league play in second place with their win over the Vikings (9-10, 7-7). G-P received 18 points from Blake Slocum and 14 points and 13 rebounds from Race Martin.

Touchet 38, Tekoa-Oakesdale 32: Matt Kates scored six of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and the visiting Indians (8-11, 6-8) held the Nighthawks (5-15, 4-10) to just 27 percent shooting. Earl Gaines paced T-O with 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

St. John-Endicott 53, Pomeroy 50: The Eagles (9-10, 7-7) held off the visiting Pirates (4-14, 4-10), moving them into a tie for third place with Garfield-Palouse.
