Retired Baseball’s all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman has thrown his final change-up, deciding at age 43 to retire and return to the San Diego Padres in a front office job. The Beverly Hills Sports Council, which represents Hoffman, confirmed that he is done after recording 601 saves in 18 seasons.

Finalized The Colorado Rockies and Carlos Gonzalez finalized an $80 million, seven-year contract. The deal keeps Gonzalez in purple pinstripes through 2017. Gonzalez had a breakout season in 2010, winning a Silver Slugger award and a Gold Glove. The 25-year-old won the National League batting title with a .336 average and also hit 34 homers and drove in 117 runs despite batting leadoff in 44 games.

Honored Carroll College football coach Mike Van Diest, who led the Saints to a sixth national championship last month, has been named the NAIA football coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association. Carroll capped a 14-0 season with a 10-7 win over Sioux Falls in the 2010 NAIA national championship game.

Declined Prosecutors in Los Angeles declined to file criminal charges against retired center fielder Lenny Dykstra after his housekeeper accused him of sexual assault. Court documents filed last week indicate an apparent lack of evidence that the 41-year-old woman was forced to give Dykstra oral sex on Saturdays as she claims.

Hospitalized A.L. MVP Josh Hamilton has been hospitalized with pneumonia. The Texas Rangers said Hamilton was diagnosed with an early case Monday. The team expects the hospital to release him by today.

Declared Illinois junior running back Mikel LeShoure spent 2010 making a name for himself, breaking Illinois’ single-season rushing record with 330 yards of it coming on one unreal November day. Figuring it’s time to move on and start cashing a paycheck for his work, he declared for the NFL draft.

Signed Right-hander Brad Penny agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. The 32-year-old Penny is coming off an abbreviated season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He went on the disabled list in late May with a strain in his upper back and he didn’t pitch again. Penny went 3-4 with a 3.23 earned-run average in nine starts.

Dropped A resisting arrest charge has been dropped against the stepfather of Boston Celtics swingman Marquis Daniels. Judge Walter Komanski dismissed the case in Orlando, Fla., against Willie Buie, who was subdued with the use of a stun gun during Game 2 of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals against the Orlando Magic.
