Confirmed Spanish cycling officials want three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador banned for one year for failing a 2010 Tour doping test. Contador confirmed the proposed sanction Wednesday in a statement released by his spokesman. He said the Spanish federation’s disciplinary committee informed him of the decision. If banned, Contador would lose his third Tour title because of the positive clenbuterol result he blames on contaminated meat.
Filed A Jewish hockey player has filed a lawsuit against the Anaheim Ducks and a minor league affiliate alleging his coaches made anti-Semitic remarks and discriminated against him because of his religion. Jason Bailey, 23, who has since been traded to the Ottawa Senators, filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Orange County Superior Court in Santa Ana, Calif. It alleges that coaches for the Bakersfield Condors, then an ECHL affiliate of the Ducks, repeatedly made anti-Semitic remarks and denied Bailey ice time.
Granted UCLA says left tackle Sean Sheller has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Sheller missed the entire 2008 season after hurting his left knee in an ATV accident. He also sat out his entire first season at UCLA after tearing a ligament in his right knee.
Ruled Missouri recruit Tony Mitchell has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA and the school plans no further appeals. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Dallas was considered one of the top high school prospects in the nation after averaging 20.5 points last year. The NCAA said Mitchell did not qualify academically.
Retired Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Rocco Baldelli retired and accepted a position as a special assistant with the team. In 519 career games with Tampa Bay and Boston, he hit .278 with 60 homers and 262 RBIs.
Resigned Sky Sports soccer anchorman Richard Keys resigned after 20 years with the British network, a day after his colleague was fired for sexist comments. The scandal was sparked by off-air footage of Keys and Andy Gray making derogatory comments about lineswoman Sian Massey, former referee Wendy Toms and West Ham executive Karren Brady on Saturday.
