Cleared Olympic and world champion swimmer Cesar Cielo was cleared to compete at the world championships in Shanghai after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a decision by the Brazilian swimming federation. After testing positive in May, Cielo said he consumed the drug furosemide, a banned diuretic and masking agent, in a contaminated batch of a food supplement he often used.
Planned North Carolina football coach Butch Davis plans to release his personal cell phone records to media outlets covering the NCAA investigation of the school’s football program. Davis didn’t specify exactly when he’d release the records and said he didn’t know if the NCAA had reviewed them.

Indicted Former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Nathaniel Webster has been indicted on one count each of gross sexual imposition and sexual battery and five counts of unlawful sex with a minor with gun specifications following an incident with a 15-year-old girl in 2009. Webster could be sentenced to up to 36 1/2 years in prison if convicted.
Arrested Police say Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith has been arrested for investigation of DUI. Smith was arrested Wednesday night, hours after winning the Oceanside Stakes aboard Mr. Commons on Del Mar’s opening day.
