Armed aliens return in ‘Battle’ release
Available this week on DVD:
“Battle: Los Angeles”: Standard-issue combat film, starring Aaron Eckhardt, with a twist: The invaders are armored aliens from another planet coming to suck the Earth dry of its resources. A film so cartoonish that it makes the cartoonish “Independence Day” look as nuanced as “Saving Private Ryan.” (1:56; PG-13 for sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction, and for language) • •
“Red Riding Hood”: The quavery, saucer-eyed Amanda Seyfried stars in director Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight”-ian take on the fairy tale about a girl, a wolf and a grandma (Julie Christie, of all people). A trippy tweenage bodice ripper that’s funny and sexy and ridiculous. (1:40; PG-13 for violence and creature terror, and some sensuality) • •
“Hall Pass”: Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis star as husbands whose wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) give them a week off marriage, no questions asked. Two incidents are laugh-out-loud, the others out-loud without the laughs. (1:38; R for crude and sexual humor throughout, language, some graphic nudity and drug use) • •
“Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son”: FBI agent Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence) and his stepson Trent go undercover at an all-girl performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. (1:47; PG-13 for some sexual humor and brief violence)
