Robinson pitches Colfax to District 7 2B baseball title

J.J. Robinson struck out 12 and hurled a three-hitter Wednesday as Colfax (17-2) defeated Kettle Falls 7-2 in the District 7 2B baseball championship game at Avista Stadium.

Kellen Morgan and Matt St. Mary had two RBIs apiece for Colfax, which opens state play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shadle Park against Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia.

Also at Avista, Kettle Falls (12-9) moved on to play Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (16-8) for the second and third seeds in a game LRS won 12-6. Dylan Hartz and Jake Dewald were a combined 5 for 7 with three RBIs for LRS.

LRS will play Riverside Christian at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walla Walla. Kettle Falls will meet Warden at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shadle.

LRS started the day with a 3-2 win that gave Springdale (11-9) the fourth seed. Traven Smith doubled home the winner in the seventh.

Springdale will play at 1 p.m. Saturday against host Mossyrock.

• Jacob Olmstead struck out nine in five innings and Daniel Hardy had two RBIs as Almira/Coulee-Hartline (20-1) defeated Curlew 3-0 in the championship game of the 1B regional at University High.

Brandon Boutain added an RBI double and Drew Isaak threw two shutout innings of relief for the Warriors, who will open state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday at Central Valley against Wilbur-Creston (13-8), the fourth seed.

Curlew (14-6) earned the No. 2 seed and will play Colton at 10 a.m. Saturday at CV. ACH and Curlew could meet again at 4 p.m. that day in the semifinals.

Also at U-Hi, Colton (10-11) earned the No. 3 seed by scoring six runs in the seventh to defeat W-C 6-5.

St. John-Endicott picked up the fifth seed with a 5-4 win that eliminated Odessa-Harrington (15-7). SJE’s Mason Van Lith struck out five and left fielder Dakota Hallenius ended an O-H uprising in the seventh with a game-saving catch. SJE will play Lake Quinault at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eisenhower High in Yakima in a quarterfinal.

Prep golf

Odessa-Harrington swept individual honors at the District 2B/1B tournament at Deer Park Golf Course, with senior Alex Hatten winning by two shots and junior Kira Powell running away by 31.

Hatten finished two rounds at 157 to hold off Colfax juniors Tyler Stevenson and Kyle Johnson. The two led the Bulldogs to the team title.

Powell’s 163 helped O-H tie for the team title with Wilbur-Creston. W-C junior Kim Conway was runner-up.

The top 17 boys and top nine girls advance to next week’s state tourney at Lakewood.

College baseball

Alex Keudell and Scott McGough combined on a seven-hitter and the Oregon Ducks (28-24-1) wrapped up a two-game nonconference sweep with a 9-0 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (29-16-1) at Eugene, Ore.

Aaron Jones went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for the Ducks, who shut out the Zags 6-0 on Tuesday.

Aaron Brooks (0-1), making his first career start, allowed five earned runs in five innings. GU’s Eric Lane and Billy Moon had two hits apiece.

The Zags have six West Coast Conference games remaining. They trail first-place San Francisco by 1 1/2 games.

Women’s golf

Washington stands in 22nd place among 24 teams after the first round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas.

The Huskies opened at 24-over-par 312 and trail leader UCLA by 23 shots.

Chessey Thomas (St. George’s) opened with an 80 for 10th-place Tennessee.
