1A/2B/1B track and field: State tournament at a glance

Where: Eastern Washington University Roos Field

When: Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m.

1A outlook

No area teams are likely to contend for a title, but a team trophy isn’t out of the question for several teams. The King’s boys and Bellevue Christsian girls are the defending champions.

Returning individual champions from the area include Colton Berry of Lakeside in the 800, Aric Walden of Newport in the 110 hurdles (where he has the overall state-leading time of 14.20) and Anandae Egland of Lakeside in the girls pole vault. Aaron Castle of Newport and Paul Thomas of Lakeside have the overall state lead in the shot put (63-3) and (185-1) discus, respectively.

Freeman’s Quinn Robinson is the 1A leader in the 400 (49.89) and Colville’s Ethan Cabbage is No. 1 in triple jump (43-11¼). Among girls, Newport sophomore Arielle Walden leads in the 100 hurdles (15.14) and long jump (17-10½) and Colville’s Tasha Luu leads in the triple jump (37-½).

Check it out: Maddie Meyers of Northwest, now a junior, won the 1,600 and 3,200 as a freshman and made it a triple crown last year by adding the 800. Her times in all three events are second overall in the state.

2B outlook

Riverside Christian boys and Pe Ell girls are the defending champions. Reardan boys, fifth last year, and Colfax, the runner-up girls by two points, should lead the local charge.

Chace Bell of Reardan is the defending 100-200 champion and Morgan Willson of Colfax was second in the girls 800, 1,600 and 3,200 last year.

Bell is the 2B leader in his events (10.94, 22.34) and teammate Roy Walser leads in the 400 (51.61). Chad Redman of Garfield-Palouse/Colton leads both hurdles (14.64, 40.34) and Rueben Clark of Northwest Christian is tops in the high jump (6-6).

On the girls side, Kelsey Chase of Northwest Christian is the 1A leader in the 100 (12.63) and 400 (1:00.52) and is second in the 200. Teammate Anna Henry leads the 800 (2:22.77) and is second in the 1,600. Colfax has the second-ranked team in all three relays.

Check it out: Defending champion Maddie Magee of Bear Creek is one of the top high jumpers in the state.

1B outlook

Mt. Rainier Lutheran swept the team titles last year. Although there were a number of top performances from area athletes, the talent was spread out too much to produce a team title.

Kassie Guglielmino of Northport won the sprint triple crown as a freshman last year and has added the long jump, where she is a contender. Andrea Heinen, a junior at Cusick, is a two-time champion in the shot put, added the discus title last year, and is also the 1B leader in her latest event, javelin.

Kennedy Seyer of Wellpinit is back to defend his title in the long jump and is also the 1B leader in the 300 hurdles. Gabriel Jones of Columbia is ranked first in the two shortest races and Valley Christian freshman Grant Marchant has emerged as the state leader in the two longest.

Check it out: There are no finals since only eight qualify in each event. There is only one chance in each race to see Guglielmino in each event and she’s worth seeing.
