Area roundup: WSU rowing wins JV8

Washington State’s women’s rowing team concluded its fall season at the Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday in Seattle.

The Cougars won the Junior Varsity 8 race, beating the Huskies at the event for the first time during coach Jane LaRiviere’s tenure at WSU. The Cougars finished second to Washington in the Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 races, and WSU’s A and B boats took second and third place, respectively, in the Varsity 4 race behind Pocock Rowing Center.

• Gonzaga finished its fall season at the Newport (Calif.) Autumn Rowing Festival, tying for sixth place. The event drew 28 entries from 15 schools.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga concluded the road portion of its schedule with a 4-1 loss to Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference play in Los Angeles. Clark Phillips scored for the Bulldogs (4-11-2, 2-7-1 WCC), who finish the season at home Friday against Santa Clara and Sunday against San Francisco.

Volleyball

No. 1 UCLA won its eighth consecutive Pac-12 volleyball match, a sweep of Washington State in Los Angeles. Meagan Ganzer had 10 kills and 11 digs for the Cougars, who fell 25-16, 25-20, 25-17. WSU hosts No. 7 California on Friday and No. 3 Stanford on Sunday.

Women’s basketball

Brianne Ryan scored 28 points in just 21 minutes to lead Eastern Washington to a 97-61 exhibition victory over Warner Pacific in Cheney. The Eagles open their regular season Friday against Corban.

• Jazmine Perkins scored 12 points to help Washington State beat Lewis-Clark State 59-53 in an exhibition in Pullman. The Cougars open the regular season Friday, playing host Penn State at the Lady Lion Classic.
