In brief: UNLV stuns top-ranked North Carolina

College basketball: Chace Stanback scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Mike Moser added 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to help the UNLV Rebels stun the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 90-80 at the Las Vegas Invitational men’s basketball tournament.

UNLV also got 16 points from Oscar Bellfield and 13 more from Anthony Marshall.

Harrison Barnes and reserve P.J. Hairston led UNC with 15 points apiece.

• UConn edges Florida State: Shabazz Napier hit a big 3-pointer with a minute left in overtime and finished with 26 points, leading No. 4 Connecticut (6-1) to a 78-76 victory over 22nd-ranked Florida State (5-2) in the consolation game of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Saturday at Paradise Island, Bahamas. Harvard defeated Central Florida 59-49 to win the title.

• Notre Dame women edge Duke: Natalie Novosel banked in a shot from the foul line with less than a second left to lift No. 4 Notre Dame to a 56-54 win over seventh-ranked Duke (4-1) in the Junkanoo Jam final in Freeport, Bahamas.

Skylar Diggins scored 19 points and Novosel had 15 for the Irish (5-1), who rallied from a 16-point deficit.

• Washington U coach fastest to 600: Washington University women’s coach Nancy Fahey became the fastest to reach 600 victories in all divisions with a 62-52 victory over Hendrix in St. Louis.

Fahey is 600-106 in 26 seasons at the Division III school, including 4-0 this season. According to the school, the previous fastest coach to 600 victories needed 716 games.

Fahey’s .850 winning percentage is fifth in NCAA history in all divisions.

Melvin hires Davis as A’s hitting coach

Baseball: Bob Melvin and Chili Davis have remained close friends since their days as teammates with the San Francisco Giants as young major leaguers.

Davis is now on Melvin’s staff, hired as Oakland’s hitting coach to complete the Athletics’ staff heading into 2012.

Melvin took over for the fired Bob Geren in June and received a three-year deal late in the season to continue as the club’s manager.

• Ex-Spokane Indians manager hired: Gene Glynn, who managed the Spokane Indians in 1992 when they were an affiliate of the San Diego Padres, was hired to manage the Minnesota Twins Triple-A team in Rochester. Glynn has not managed a team since 1992.

Grabner leads Islanders to victory

NHL: Former Spokane Chief Michael Grabner snapped a tie with a short-handed goal and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in Newark, N.J., for their first road win of the season.

• Coyotes blank Stars: Mike Smith stopped 26 shots for his second shutout of the season Mikkel Boedker and former Spokane Chief Ray Whitney scored second-period goals, leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a 3-0 win over the Dallas Stars in Glendale, Ariz.

Cuche wins downhill at Lake Louise

Snow skiing: Didier Cuche of Switzerland won the men’s downhill season opener in the World Cup race at Lake Louise, Alberta.

• Germany’s Rebensburg wins: Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany held off Elisabeth Goergl of Austria on the final run to win a World Cup women’s giant slalom in Aspen, Colo. Julia Mancuso finished third to become the first American on the podium at this venue since 2004.

Soviet weightlifter Alekseyev dies at 69

Miscellany: Super heavyweight weightlifter Vasily Alekseyev, 69, who dominated the sport throughout the 1970s and set 80 world records for the Soviet Union, has died in Moscow of heart problems.

The Russian weightlifting federation on Friday confirmed the death of Alekseyev, describing him as a “legend of Soviet sport.”

• Vettel wins record 15th pole: Formula One racing champion Sebastian Vettel set the record for most poles in a season, capturing his 15th at the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo to break Nigel Mansell’s 19-year-old record.

• Ex-heavyweight contender Lyle dies: Former heavyweight contender Ron Lyle, who fought Muhammad Ali for the title in 1975 and later battled George Foreman, has died in Denver at age 70.

Lyle died from complications from a sudden stomach ailment.

• Two horses die at Hollywood Park : Jeranimo beat War Element by 2 3/4 lengths in the $250,000 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., in a victory overshadowed by the deaths of two horses.

Earlier in the $100,000 Vernon O. Underwood Stakes won by Pacific Ocean, runner-up Irrefutable died immediately afterward. In the fourth race, the 5-year-old favorite Waltzing With Blue was euthanized after injuring his left front leg.

• Broner wins boxing title: At Cincinnati, hometown fighter Adrien Broner won the vacant WBO junior lightweight title, stopping Argentina’s Vicente Rodriguez in the third round.

Irish golfers lead: Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell shot an 8-under 64 in better-ball play to give Ireland a two-stroke lead in the World Cup.
