Area roundup: Cougs upset Bears in soccer
Washington State used two second-half goals to upset 21st-ranked California 2-0 in Pac-12 women’s soccer action Sunday in Pullman.
Brandi Vega gave the Cougars (8-4-1, 2-1-0 Pac-12) a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute, and freshman Nicole Setterlund scored her first career goal less than four minutes later.
WSU, which hosts Utah on Friday, has already surpassed its 2010 season win total.
• Gonzaga posted its third consecutive shutout, a 2-0 win over Montana in Spokane.
Ali Ohashi and Emma Dolcetti scored for the Bulldogs (7-4-0), who closed out their nonconference schedule with the most victories since the 2007 team won nine matches.
Gonzaga, which has gone 276 minutes without allowing a goal, opens West Coast Conference play Friday against Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif.
• Whitworth and Linfield played to a scoreless tie in Northwest Conference action in McMinnville, Ore.
Callie Bergstrom made five saves for the Pirates (3-4-2, 3-2-2 NWC), who were outshot 15-4 by the Wildcats.
Whitworth hosts Willamette on Saturday.
• Kelsey Lord’s goal in the 83rd minute gave San Jose State a 2-1 victory over Idaho in a Western Athletic Conference match in San Jose, Calif.
Chelsea Small scored her seventh goal of the season in the 65th minute for the Vandals (4-8-2, 0-2 WAC), but the Spartans scored 38 seconds later to even the match.
Idaho hosts Hawaii on Friday to open WAC play.
• Teresa Noyola scored in the 94th minute to give No. 1 Stanford a 1-0 victory over Washington in Pac-12 play in Seattle.
The Huskies (4-4-3, 0-2-1 Pac-12) host Colorado on Friday.
Men’s soccer
Cameron Bushey’s conversion of a penalty kick in the 29th minute was the only scoring of the day as Whitworth beat Linfield 1-0 in a Northwest Conference match in McMinnville, Ore.
The Pirates (7-2-1, 5-1-0 NWC), who outshot the Wildcats 23-6, host Whitman on Saturday.
• Gonzaga extended two dubious streaks in a 2-0 West Coast Conference loss to Santa Clara in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Bulldogs (2-6-1, 0-2-0 WCC) lost their 11th straight conference road match and haven’t scored in 298 minutes, 28 seconds.
Gonzaga hosts Loyola Marymount on Friday in the WCC home opener.
