Gonzaga loses in four games to BYU

Gonzaga University overcame a second-game nightmare but couldn’t maintain the momentum and dropped a West Coast Conference volleyball match to visiting Brigham Young in four games Monday night.

The Cougars (16-5, 5-2 WCC), led by Christie Carpenter and Jennifer Hamson with 17 and 16 kills, respectively, won 25-23, 25-8, 25-27, 25-10.

Terran Poindexter had 13 kills and Meredith Crenshaw and Kyle Edinger added 11 kills apiece for GU (7-12, 1-7). Kennedy Wesley and Kristina Lavrisha had 11 digs each for the Bulldogs.

Slowpitch softball

North Central and Lewis and Clark advanced to the semifinals of the Greater Spokane League playoffs with wins in loser-out games Monday.

Tamiya Tisdale and Hannah George had doubles and drove in two runs each to lead NC’s 13-hit attack that turned back visiting Gonzaga Prep (6-11) 6-1. Kilee Brown had three hits that also included a double for NC. Jessica Demchuk drove in the G-Prep run.

The third-seeded Indians (12-5) play at No. 2 Central Valley (13-3) at 4 p.m. today with the winner advancing to Thursday’s championship game.

Winning pitcher Natalie Hoogner had a 2-for-3 game that included a two-run single to highlight a six-run sixth inning that capped No. 5 seed LC’s 10-1 win at No. 4 Rogers (10-7). Haley Sumner added two doubles and two RBIs for the Tigers.

LC (8-9) visits top-seeded University (15-1) today at 4 to determine the other finalist.

Men’s golf

Jarred Bossio tied for 24th at 6-over-par 216 for Idaho, which finished 14th in the Windon Memorial in Skokie, Ill.

Arkansas won the 54-hole event at 847. Matt Thomson of Michigan was medalist with a 5-under 205.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Washington’s first Big Sky Conference win of the season, a 3-0 shutout on the road of No. 1 Weber State, helped earn the Eagles a pair of conference player of the week awards.

Senior forward Whitney Brannan, the school’s all-time scoring leader, had two goals and two assists as EWU split two games, to earn Offensive Player of the Week. She had a goal and the two assists against Weber.

Junior goalkeeper Jamie Walker was co-Defensive POW after stopping 19 shots during the weekend, including a career-high 12 against Weber in collecting her second-career shutout.

• Idaho junior Chelsea Small is the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals as the Vandals had a 1-0 win and a 1-1 tie last week.

Her ninth goal of the season extends her school career-record total to 30.
