Jets’ Revis hangs up on radio host

Darrelle Revis shuts down wide receivers – and radio hosts.

The New York Jets All-Pro cornerback abruptly hung up during a radio interview Friday, at the urging of Jared Winley, the team’s director of media relations, when the conversation turned testy.

Mike Francesa was talking to Revis by phone on 660 WFAN in New York for a few minutes when he tried to get the cornerback to acknowledge that he committed a penalty on Miami wide receiver Brandon Marshall before his 100-yard interception return for a touchdown Monday night.

“You know you can’t touch him like that down the field,” Francesa said.

Revis denied committing a penalty, saying, “if you know football and you watch the film, you can see he was tripping and that was the only thing I could do is put my hands out.”

But a laughing Francesa refused to accept Revis’ explanation.

“I can say whatever I want to say,” said an increasingly agitated Revis, one of the Jets’ most accessible and media-friendly players. “Did the ref throw the flag?”

No penalty was called, and Revis’ interception return tied for the longest in franchise history.

Both Revis and Francesa continued to go back and forth for a few minutes before the radio host said the cornerback was “the only one in the world who doesn’t think that was a penalty.”

Revis said he didn’t care what anyone thought, and Winley jumped into the interview.

“Darrelle, Darrelle,” he said. “Stop.”

Kreutz’s playing days over

Center Olin Kreutz has told the New Orleans Saints that his playing days are over, informing the team that he has lost his passion for football.

Kreutz, 34, was unavailable for comment.

Earlier this week, Kreutz met with Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and coach Sean Payton.

Though Payton wouldn’t discuss what was talked about in that meeting, he said there had been no hint that this was the decision Kreutz would eventually make.

Payton said the Saints won’t make a roster move yet, meaning they’re still at the 53-man limit.

Best ruled out

Detroit running back Jahvid Best has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against Atlanta because of a concussion, and the Lions also put running back Jerome Harrison on the reserve/non-football illness list after he was reportedly diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Coach Jim Schwartz said any details on Harrison’s condition would have to come from the player. Citing NFL sources it did not identify, ESPN reported this week that Harrison’s tumor was revealed when he had a physical after being dealt by Detroit to Philadelphia in a trade that was voided by that discovery.

The Detroit Free Press, citing teammates, reported that the running back was to have surgery Friday.

The Lions were sending Harrison (Washington State University) to the Eagles in a trade that would have brought running back Ronnie Brown to Detroit. That deal was voided, and Harrison’s health is now foremost on the team’s mind.

Around the league

Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was fined $10,000 by the league for talking on a cell phone while in the bench area in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu was calling his wife to assure her he wasn’t seriously injured. … Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk was fined $10,000 by the NFL for an obscene gesture during last week’s win over St. Louis. … The biggest fine went to Bengals RB Cedric Peerman for an illegal blindside block on a special teams play against Indianapolis, costing him $20,000. … Sam Bradford missed practice again, raising the possibility that A.J. Feeley will start at quarterback Sunday when the St. Louis Rams play on the road against the Dallas Cowboys.
