Died Former Green Bay Packers guard Gale Gillingham died at his home in Minnesota while lifting weights, his son said Friday. He was 67. Wade Gillingham said the Hall of Famer appeared to have had a heart attack Thursday at his home in Little Falls, but his family doesn’t have confirmation on a cause of death. Gillingham was Green Bay’s first-round draft choice and 13th overall in 1966 from the University of Minnesota. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and six-time All Pro.

Hired Pitching coach Curt Young is leaving the Boston Red Sox to return to Oakland and work under manager Bob Melvin, who received a three-year deal in September to be the club’s permanent manager. The A’s announced that Young had signed a one-year deal to rejoin the club. He was drafted by the A’s in the fourth round in 1981, played 10 seasons for the A’s and was their pitching coach from 2004-2010.

Settled The University of Texas paid a $400,000 settlement to a former administrative assistant who complained of sexual harassment by a former top athletics official. The agreement released by the university said the woman had agreed to end all complaints against Cleve Bryant and the school. Bryant was fired earlier this year as associate athletics director for football operations in the wake of the complaint.

Banned Cyclist Joseph Papp accepted an eight-year ban for his second doping offense, a reduced penalty for assisting the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The 36-year-old Papp was a USADA witness in the 2007 arbitration case that eventually stripped Floyd Landis of his Tour de France title.

Pleaded Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien entered a plea of not guilty to four counts stemming from a boating incident in Minnesota. Byfuglien is accused of boating while intoxicated and refusing to take a blood or urine test, and other charges.

Fined Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber was fined $2,500 by the NHL for boarding Vancouver forward Jannik Hansen on Thursday night.
