Your week

YOUR HOME

Just in time for back-to-school lunches, the folks from Glad have solved the problem of soggy salads.

New Glad to Go lunch- and snack-size containers have a small cup that snaps into the lid, ideal for holding a single serving of salad dressing, veggie dip or some other accompaniment.

The plastic containers are reusable and dishwasher safe. Look for them at grocery stores and mass merchandisers; a package of four retails for around $2.19.

YOUR HEALTH

Lumpectomies and radiation are just as effective for young women with early-stage breast cancer as a mastectomy, according to a new study by the University of Maryland.

The results of the analysis of nearly 15,000 patients listed in a nationwide cancer registry were presented at the 2011 Breast Cancer Symposium in San Francisco last week.

The researchers said mastectomies have been on the rise among young women because of concerns regarding cancer recurrence. Women younger than 40 can have more aggressive tumors and are often at higher risk for having their cancer recur.

But Steven J. Feigenberg, a radiation oncologist at the University of Maryland and lead author of the study, said: “This study confirms that breast-conservation therapy is a safe, effective treatment option and will not have a detrimental effect on survival.”

YOUR FOOD

Don’t let summer slip away without one last barbecue blowout. A quick rub made with peanuts and spices adds fast flavor to grilled pork tenderloin; for the recipe, see page C5.
