Area roundup: Cougs win first at USC

Jocelyn Jeffers scored in the 86th minute to give Washington State its first win at USC, 2-1 on Sunday in the Pac-12 women’s soccer opener for both teams.

The Cougars (7-3-1) fell behind 14 seconds into the match but rallied for their third come-from-behind win in 11 days. Rachael Doyle’s first goal of the season tied the game for WSU in the 67th minute before Jeffers’ first career game-winner.

The Cougars host No. 1 Stanford on Friday.

• Jill Lockhart scored less than a minute into the second half for the game’s only goal as Idaho beat Eastern Washington 1-0 in Moscow.

The Vandals (4-6-2) outshot the Eagles (1-7-0) 24-6 and goalkeeper Jamie Walker helped keep Eastern in the game with nine saves. Caroline Towles made three saves for the victory and Idaho’s first shutout of the season.

The Vandals open Western Athletic Conference play this weekend, with matches at Fresno State on Friday and at San Jose State on Sunday. Eastern visits Montana for the Big Sky Conference opener Friday.

• Anna Valentine’s goal in the second half gave North Idaho College a 1-0 victory over Western Nebraska Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo.

The Cardinals (9-0), who outshot the Cougars 20-8, return home to host Community Colleges of Spokane on Wednesday.

Volleyball

Arizona swept Washington State in Pac-12 action in Tucson, Ariz., winning 25-13, 25-19 and 25-19.

Meagan Ganzer had 10 kills and Camryn Irwin had 29 assists for the Cougars (9-5, 1-3 Pac-12), who host Oregon State on Friday in Pullman. The 7:30 p.m. match will be televised by Root Sports Northwest.

Men’s soccer

Ryan Caballero, who was pulled in his previous game, posted his third shutout of the season as Gonzaga and University of Missouri-Kansas City played to a scoreless tie in double overtime in Corvallis, Ore.

Caballero made four saves for the Bulldogs (2-4-1), who begin West Coast Conference play this weekend with matches at San Francisco on Friday and at Santa Clara on Sunday.

• Matt Lieggi scored the lone goal for North Idaho College in a 3-1 loss to Western Nebraska Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo. The Cardinals (3-4-1) host Community Colleges of Spokane on Thursday.

Golf

Whitworth’s Emily Guthrie finished tied for second place individually and led the Pirates to a second-place team finish at the Pacific University Fall Invitational in Banks, Ore.

Whitworth’s two-day total of 655 was 26 strokes behind winner George Fox. Guthrie, who led after a first-round 73, shot an 84 on Sunday to finish six strokes behind Megan McGrew of George Fox.

Cross country

Shadle Park runners were the first two finishers among high schoolers at Saturday’s Erik Anderson Cross Country Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane.

Nathan Weitz was the winner, completing the 4.92-kilometer course in 14 minutes, 41 seconds. Nick Hauger finished second in 15:54.

The Highlanders also won the team title, beating Lake City.
