Hired Wisconsin-Green Bay found a familiar face to fill its women’s basketball coaching vacancy Wednesday as Kevin Borseth resigned from Michigan to return to the program he led for nine seasons. He will replace Matt Bollant, who recently left for Illinois. It’s a surprising return for Borseth, who spent the past five seasons as the head coach at Michigan after leaving Green Bay.

Suspended North Dakota State announced that its longtime women’s athletic director has been suspended for an episode in February that involved a student at the school. Athletic director Gene Taylor said women’s athletic director Lynn Dorn was suspended for two weeks without pay for a series of incidents that happened on Feb. 23. Dorn, 62, has been at the school for 34 years. The Bison women’s teams have won seven national championships and 81 conference titles in her tenure as athletic director. Taylor said in a March 26 letter of reprimand to Dorn that she was being suspended due to “significant inappropriate professional behavior.” Taylor cited the school’s anti-harassment policy.

Signed The Cleveland Indians locked up one of their best players. The team and Asdrubal Cabrera finalized a three-year contract, a deal that adds two additional seasons at $16.5 million for the All-Star shortstop. Cabrera will make $4.55 million this season, $6.5 million in 2013 and $10 million in 2014. The 26-year-old Cabrera had a breakout season in 2011, batting .273 with 25 homers and 92 RBIs. Cleveland acquired Cabrera from Seattle in 2006 in a trade for first baseman Eduardo Perez.

• The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a five-year contract with left tackle Demetress Bell, hoping the former Bills lineman can replace injured All-Pro Jason Peters. Bell, 6-foot-5 and 311 pounds, started 30 games in four seasons in Buffalo.

• The Carolina Panthers added more competition in their defensive backfield, signing free-agent safety Reggie Smith from the San Francisco 49ers. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith played in all 16 regular season games and both playoff games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011.

• The New York Mets agreed to a $25.5 million, five-year contract with pitcher Jonathon Niese.

• Wide receiver Torry Holt signed a one-day contract so he could retire with the St. Louis Rams, where he was a key part of a Super Bowl champion and the Greatest Show on Turf. Holt was a seven-time Pro Bowler with St. Louis from 1999-2008.

Honored University of Idaho decathlete Andrew Blaser was named Western Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week after he scored 7,035 points – just shy of a career best – during his ninth-place finish at the Texas Relay.
