Announced Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is due for release from a Las Vegas jail by the weekend after serving two months in a domestic battery case. Records show the 35-year-old undefeated champion is due for release Friday from the Clark County Detention Center. Las Vegas police Officer Jose Hernandez said Wednesday that Mayweather was granted time off his 90-day sentence for work and good behavior. Mayweather surrendered for jail May 1 after pleading guilty in December to misdemeanor charges in a September 2010 scuffle with his girlfriend, Josie Harris, while two of their children watched.

Confirmed Louisiana State University coach Les Miles confirms that former Penn State reserve quarterback Rob Bolden has joined the Tigers’ football team. Bolden is allowed to transfer immediately because of NCAA sanctions against the Nittany Lions program stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal earlier this year. LSU, which reported for fall camp on Wednesday, already has its starting quarterback spot set with junior Zach Mettenberger. However, Miles says Bolden “is talented and will be given every opportunity to compete.”

Dismissed Senior cornerback Greg Reid, one of the nation’s top punt returners, was dismissed from Florida State’s football team for a violation of team rules. Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher had no further comment after announcing that Reid was done at the university.

Decided Senior Michael Bowie, who was a potential starter at left tackle, has decided to transfer from Oklahoma State. Coach Mike Gundy said that Bowie violated team rules and decided to leave the program.

Signed New York signed free-agent guard Chris Smith, the younger brother of Knicks guard J.R. Smith. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Extended Three consecutive playoff appearances earned Philadelphia Flyers coach Peter Laviolette a multiyear contract extension according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
