Obituary: Torney, Dorothy Jean

Age 90

TORNEY, Dorothy Jean (Woodley)
August 19, 1922 ~ August 5, 2012

Dorothy J. Torney passed away peacefully on August 5, 2012 at the Hospice House of Spokane.

Dorothy was born August 19th, 1922 in Genessee, ID to Oliver and Winnie Woodley.

She came to Spokane and attended business school where she met James K. Torney.

They married on November 15, 1941 and made their home in Spokane Valley.

Dorothy worked at the Sugar Bowl in Millwood, and as a receptionist for Dr. Bob Morrow, before working many years at the Inland Empire Paper Company.

Race walking became a focus of Dorothy’s interests and efforts to stay healthy.

She participated in many races and taught race walking in the Spokane area.

Dorothy loved Bloomsday and completed over 20 Bloomsday runs.

Her husband Jim was always by her side, supporting her in her races and helping out wherever needed.

She made a great many friends during her race walking years.

She also volunteered for many BRRC and track and field events.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 1993 and is survived by their two daughters, Ann McBride, Rixeyville, VA and Jean Kinder, Forest Grove, OR; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
