Whitworth baseball loses opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer scored 11 runs in the fifth inning and the Sagehens stung Whitworth 19-2 in the Pirates’ baseball season opener on Thursday.

Nick Motsinger had two of the Pirates’ six hits. Tyler Pfeffer and JR Larrell collected RBIs.

Starter Dan Scheibe gave up seven runs, five earned, on six hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer scored its 19 runs on only 13 hits as the Pirates committed three errors while their pitchers walked seven and hit five batters.

Travis Rooke-Ley started for the Sagehens (1-0-1) and went five innings, giving up just one hit and striking out seven to pick up the win.

Whitworth continues its California road trip with a game against Occidental today.
