Leonard A. Oakland Film Festival - Fourth annual event pays tribute to Oakland, who is a professor of English and a member of the Core 250 team and has taught at Whitworth for 46 years. Since he moved into a half-time faculty position, the university has been working with his friends and family to create an endowment in his name. Since Oakland has identified film studies as the area he’s most excited about funding for the long-term, the endowment is being used to fund an annual film festival. Today, “Breaking Away” at 7 p.m. Directed by Peter Yates, this 1979 film follows four buddies, high school grads who are working-class townies surrounding by the gownies who go to the big university in their Indiana town, and don’t know what to do next with their lives. But one, at least, has a dream. Also showing that night will be “Bad News Bears” at 11 p.m. Saturday, Secret International Film at 7 p.m. Rights were still being secured at press time. The Bro Code: How Contemporary Culture Creates Sexist Men - Filmmaker Thomas Keith takes aim at the forces in male culture that condition boys and men to dehumanize and disrespect women. Keith breaks down a range of contemporary media forms, zeroing in on movies and music videos that glamorize womanizing and pornography. Even as epidemic levels of men’s violence against women persist in the real world, the message Keith uncovers in virtually every corner of our entertainment culture is clear: It’s not only normal – but cool – for boys and men to control and humiliate women. Arguing that there’s nothing normal, natural, or inevitable about this mentality, The Bro Code challenges young people, men and women alike, to step up and fight back against the idea that being a real man means being sexist. Sponsored by EWU Women’s Studies Center. Tuesday, noon-1 p.m. Eastern Washington University, Monroe Hall, Room 207, Cheney. Free. (509) 359-2898.
