In brief: Indiana rallies past No. 2 Ohio State
Men’s basketball: Indiana did it again. Three weeks after upsetting No. 1 Kentucky, the Hoosiers took down No. 2 Ohio State Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
Victor Oladipo scored the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left and Jordan Hulls finished with 17 points, giving the No. 13 Hoosiers a 74-70 victory – the school’s first sweep of the nation’s top two teams.
“They’ve been punking us the past couple years and we realized that,” Oladipo said. “This year we had to go toe-to-toe with them.”
Indiana (13-1, 1-1 Big Ten) became the ninth team since 1996-97 to beat No. 1 and No. 2 in the same season and joined Kansas in 2007-08 and Louisville in 2003-04 as the only teams over that span to achieve the feat in the same month. Against Kentucky, the Hoosiers needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Christian Watford to win it.
On Saturday, the Hoosiers needed Oladipo’s layup, three free throws from Hulls and Watford, a rebound from Watford and a steal from Oladipo in the final 36 seconds to seal it.
Ohio State (13-2, 1-1) was led by Aaron Craft with 16 points and Jared Sullinger with 15 points and nine rebounds.
• No. 3 Kentucky beats No. 4 Louisville: Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had season highs with 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead No. 3 Kentucky in a rough-and-tumble 69-62 victory over No. 4 Louisville in Lexington, Ky., to extend the nation’s longest home winning streak.
Fellow freshman Anthony Davis added 18 points, all in the second half, for the Wildcats (13-1) in their annual in-state rivalry game that at times looked more like a free-throw shooting contest with 52 fouls.
The Cardinals (12-2) only led at 2-0, but gave Kentucky all it could handle after rallying from an early 15-point deficit before tying it in the second half thanks to Russ Smith, who had a career-high 30 points.
Kentucky has won 44 straight at home for the nation’s longest streak ahead of Duke’s 43.
• Iowa upsets No. 11 Wisconsin: Freshman reserve Aaron White scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and Iowa stunned No. 11 Wisconsin 72-65 in Madison, Wis., snapping the Badgers’ six-game winning streak.
White was 6 of 7 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and made all four of his free throws as the Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-1 Big Ten) held on to beat the Badgers for just the third time in the past 15 meetings.
Bryce Cartwright added 17 points for Iowa against a Wisconsin defense which came in allowing a national-best 44.4 points per game. Jordan Taylor had 17 points to lead Wisconsin (12-3, 1-1).
Bynum returns, leads Lakers over Nuggets
NBA: Andrew Bynum had 29 points and 13 rebounds in his season debut following a four-game suspension that carried over from the playoffs, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the visiting Denver Nuggets.
Bynum shot 13 for 18, helping the Lakers win their third straight following the team’s first 0-2 start since 2002-03.
The 7-foot center was suspended without pay for the first four games of the season because of a flagrant foul against Dallas’ J.J. Barea in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals.
Kobe Bryant, bogged down by foul trouble, had 17 points along with nine assists and 10 rebounds. The Lakers overcame 2-for-24 shooting from 3-point range.
• Pistons beat Pacers, end Frank’s 20-game skid: Jonas Jerebko had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Detroit ended Lawrence Frank’s 20-game losing streak with a 96-88 win over Indiana in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Frank hadn’t won a game since April 13, 2009, when his Nets beat the Charlotte Bobcats. The Nets lost their final game that season, and Frank was fired after New Jersey got off to a 0-16 start the next fall. He also lost his first three games with the Pistons since replacing John Kuester during the offseason.
Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey (Eastern Washington University) had 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Austin Daye (Gonzaga) didn’t score in six minutes of action.

• Kovalchuk leads Devils over Penguins: Ilya Kovalchuk scored on a penalty shot in the first period and added an assist on David Clarkson’s power-play goal four minutes later, leading the New Jersey Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Newark, N.J.
The Penguins lost their second straight game after a four-game win streak.
• Canada defeats U.S. team at world juniors: Canada capped a perfect run in the preliminary round of the world junior hockey championship with a 3-2 victory over the United States at Edmonton, Alberta.
Mark Stone had a goal and an assist for Canada, which will face either Russia or the Czech Republic in Tuesday’s semifinal in Calgary. Charlie Coyle and captain Jason Zucker scored for the U.S. in the third period.
Canada (4-0) had already secured first in Pool B and a bye to the semifinals heading into the game, while the U.S. (1-3) already knew it was headed for relegation round.
