Clinton selects Kwan

Nine-time U.S. champion figure skater Michelle Kwan has been chosen for a women’s sports council by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Council to Empower Women and Girls Through Sports also includes U.S. soccer stars Mia Hamm and Julie Foudy, tennis pioneer Billie Jean King and perennial WNBA All-Star Tamika Catchings. Former Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summitt and Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer also are on the council. The State Department says the council is meant to help the United States use its success in women’s sports “to empower girls and foster greater understanding.”
