Gonzaga baseball team improves to 8-0

Travis Forbes had three hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs and Alex Stanford drilled a two-run home run to propel the unbeaten Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-0) to a 6-1 victory over the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (5-4) in the opener of the UTSA Classic in San Antonio.

Marco Gonzales (1-0) allowed six hits and a run in six innings to earn the victory. He struck out nine. Derek Peterson tossed three shutout innings to pick up his first career save.

Steven Halcomb had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

• J.D. Leckenby gave up one run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and Taylor Ard belted a solo home run to power the Washington State Cougars (6-2) to an 8-2 win over the Northern Colorado Bears (0-5) in nonconference play in Pullman.

It was the fifth straight victory for WSU.

Women’s basketball

Angela Woods came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and the North Idaho Cardinals (23-4, 12-2) breezed to a 78-52 win over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans (9-19, 0-14) in SWAC play in Rangely, Colo.

Softball

Nikki Bralisford hit two home runs and drove in five runs to power host Southern Idaho (20-9, 12-4) to a 13-5 win over the North Idaho Cardinals (12-18, 10-11) in SWAC action in Twin Falls.

Brianna Bishop went 3 for 3 with two homers, a double, and three RBIs for NIC.
