In brief: Guard killed during riot at federal prison

From Wire Reports

BRANDON, Miss. – Officials said a riot at a privately run federal prison in southwest Mississippi that left one guard dead and five other correctional officers and an inmate injured has been brought under control.

Prison spokeswoman Emilee Beach said the uprising at the Adams County facility was brought under control Sunday night, hours after it started.

Adams County Coroner James Lee confirmed that a prison guard died, but he said he could not provide any other details. An Adams County sheriff’s spokeswoman said the guard died while being transported to a hospital.

Beach said the prison, owned and operated by Corrections Corp. of America, holds illegal immigrants, most for charges of re-entering the United States after being deported.

Three men charged in Winans carjacking

DETROIT – Three young men were arraigned Sunday in the assault and carjacking of popular Detroit pastor and gospel singing icon Marvin Winans.

The office of Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy identified the suspects as Detroit residents Montoya Givens and Christopher Moorehead, both 20, and Brian K. Young, 18, of Macomb County’s Clinton Township.

They are charged with carjacking, unarmed robbery and conspiracy, said Maria Miller, Worthy’s spokeswoman. The charges carry up to life in prison.

The men appeared in Detroit’s 36th District Court and were ordered held on $200,000 bonds.

Winans, 54, was attacked Wednesday while pumping gas. The robbers took his sport utility vehicle, Rolex watch, cash and credit cards.

Bus driver fatally shot by passenger

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A bus driver was shot to death Sunday in West Hollywood by a passenger authorities say jumped out of the vehicle’s window and attempted to flee down a street before he was captured.

The driver, whose name was not released, died at a local hospital, said sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Gordon. He said the man was shot in the torso.

Witnesses told police they saw the shooter climb out a window and run down the street. A suspect was arrested nearby.

Authorities didn’t immediately give a motive for the shooting.

Alberto hovers off South Carolina coast

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tropical Storm Alberto hovered off the South Carolina and Georgia coasts on Sunday, producing showers and serving as a reminder that the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is just around the corner.

The first storm of the season that officially begins June 1 prompted a tropical storm watch, and forecasters warned that it could produce high winds, heavy surf, rip currents and scattered rain across the region.

“It’s making the closest approach to the coastline now, so the impacts shouldn’t be much different than what we are already seeing,” said Jonathan Lamb, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, S.C.

It’s currently moving southwest at 6 mph, but forecasters expect it to turn northeast sometime today.
