Wrigley wins eighth consecutive SAWGA

Beth Wrigley won the Spokane Area Women’s Golf Association city championship for the eighth consecutive year on Thursday, finishing with a three-day total of 234 after the final round at Indian Canyon.

The 126-woman field began at Spokane County Club and moved to Downriver for the second round.

“I didn’t play three of the best rounds, but I hung in there,” Wrigley said.

Wrigley defeated Janet Skaife and Cindy Vig by 12 strokes.

The association is celebrating its 50th year.

Hockey

Todd Fiddler scored twice and Mac Engel, making his Western Hockey League preseason debut, had 37 saves as the Spokane Chiefs defeated the Kelowna Rockets 4-3 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane won its fourth consecutive game to run its preseason record to 4-1-0-0.

The Chiefs’ preseason schedule ends tonight at Tri-City. Spokane begins the regular season Sept. 22, also at Tri-City. Spokane’s home opener is Sept. 29, also against the Americans.

Volleyball

Kayla Beal’s 12 kills led Sacramento State (5-5) to a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Washington (0-12) in a Big Sky Conference opener at Sacramento, Calif.

Kelsey Julian had kills and Cora Kellerman 18 digs for the Eagles.

• Ashley Christman led four Vandals in double figures with 13 kills, and Idaho (3-8) snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over visiting Denver (6-4) in a Western Athletic Conference opener.

Ryann Carter had 43 assists and four of Idaho’s seven aces.

• Kate Hart had 15 kills, while hitting .682, and another match best with four aces as Community Colleges of Spokane (9-3) posted a 3-0 sweep of visiting Clackamas (5-11) in nonconference play at Spokane Falls CC.

Camille Rounds added 22 assists and 10 digs for the Sasquatch.
