Filed An attorney for Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley asked a judge to approve a pre-trial diversion program instead of putting the player on trial facing charges of drunken driving and fleeing police. His trial was set to start Wednesday morning; instead, paperwork was filed requesting Fairley attend an anti-DUI course.
Extended The San Diego Chargers signed receiver Malcom Floyd to a three-year contract extension through 2015. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Floyd has 190 receptions for 3,397 yards and 21 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons.
Signed The Washington Redskins signed running back Ryan Grant. An expected backup, Grant spent five seasons with Green Bay but has been looking for work since the team opted not to re-sign him after last season.
Revealed Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon is suffering from early-stage dementia, and he says if he could do it over, he wouldn’t play football. The 53-year-old said knowing now the effects of the punishment he received in his 14-year NFL career, he’d play baseball instead.
Sidelined The Arizona Cardinals placed running back Beanie Wells on the NFL’s new injured reserve/designated for return list, meaning he won’t be able to play in a game until Nov. 25. Wells was injured in Sunday’s win over Philadelphia.
Suspended The Big Sky Conference issued a one-game suspension to Northern Arizona football player Mike Dosen for an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit in his team’s game at Montana last weekend.
Recovering Four-time Olympic gold medalist runner Sanya Richards-Ross is recovering from toe surgery. Richards-Ross revealed that she had surgery Tuesday to alleviate pain in her right big toe.
Selected Former track great Edwin Moses has been voted chair of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s board of directors. USADA said that Moses was selected to fill the chair position at the Sept. 13 board meeting.
