Cougars shut out Utes
Scott Simon (3-0) fired a complete-game five-hit shutout, striking out a career-high seven along the way, to help the Washington State Cougars (17-13, 4-5) salvage the final game of a three-game Pacific-12 Conference series with a 5-0 victory over the Utah Utes (14-14, 4-8) in Salt Lake City on Sunday.
No. 8 hitter Austin Pernell had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Cougars, while Collin Slaybaugh added two hits, scoring twice.
• Ryan Strombom (1-6) allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort and the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers (8-22, 5-10) scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning to post a 4-2 win over the Whitworth Pirates (10-17-1, 5-10) in Northwest Conference play.
Tyler Pfeffer had two doubles and drove in a run for Whitworth.
Nick Scourey (1-4) was the tough-luck loser.
• The West Coast Conference series finale between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Portland Pilots was rained out in Portland.
The game was rescheduled for today at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs (19-10-1, 7-4 WCC) are going for a three-game sweep.
Rowing
The Washington State Cougars women picked up a win and a pair of runner-up finishes on the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay in San Diego.
The Cougars’ second varsity 8 won the Petite Final in 6 minutes, 44.8 seconds – just under 7 seconds ahead of second-place Iowa.
The Cougars’ Varsity 8 finished second behind Wisconsin, while the Novice 8 placed second behind Texas.
Southern Cal’s women won the coveted Jessop-Whittier Cup for the third straight year, while the Cal men won the Copley Cup for the 12th time.
Golf
The Whitworth men won the NWC Spring Classic in Bremerton, Wash.
Joey DeGroff and Jesse Salzwedel shot even-par 72s to tie for second place for the Whits. The tourney was shortened to one round because of weather conditions.
Willamette’s Ryan Kukula was the medalist with a 1-under 71.
The Pirates finished with a 3-over 291 team total, 12 shots in front of runner-up Pacific Lutheran.
Whitworth freshman Chelsea Bayley, from Lakeland High, shot a 3-over 75 to finish a stroke in front of George Fox’s Kelsey Morrison to grab medalist honors in the women’s Spring Classic.
The Whitworth women placed sixth. George Fox won the team title with a five-stroke victory over second-place Whitman.
Softball
Hooch Fagaly went 2 for 4 with a home run and two runs batted in to lead the 17th-ranked Washington Huskies (31-10, 9-3 Pac-12) to a 4-3 win over the visiting and 24th-ranked Oregon State Beavers (24-14, 1-8) in Pac-12 Conference action.
• The Northwest Conference doubleheader between Whitworth and visiting Willamette was rained out. No makeup date has been set.
