In brief: Suspect arrested in Browne’s shooting

From Staff Reports

Spokane police officers arrested a man suspected of shooting another man in the head at a Browne’s Addition apartment building Tuesday night.

The victim was laying carpet in a Pacific Terrace apartment on the 2200 block of West Pacific Avenue when there was a confrontation with a resident around 5:45 p.m., Capt. Dave Richards said.

The confrontation moved outside the apartment and the victim was shot behind the ear in the alley, but he was talking and alert when medics arrived. He was listed in serious condition, Richards said.

As the search for the shooter developed, the perimeter quickly expanded, pushing neighbors and media out of the area after police learned the shooting suspect was not inside an apartment initially identified as his potential hideout.

Family told SWAT negotiators suspect Justin C. Werle, 28, had left that apartment earlier, and officers found him walking in the area of 13th Avenue and Coeur d’Alene Street around 9 p.m. He was arrested without incident, Richards said.

Charges have not been filed, Richards said, but Major Crimes detectives served a search warrant on the apartment Tuesday night. A weapon had not been recovered.

Six injured in chain-reaction car crash

Six people were injured in a Monday night chain-reaction crash started by a car driven by a 15-year-old boy in Stevens County, according to the Washington State Patrol.

On Tuesday, WSP identified the adults involved as Naomi Smith, 35, and Linda Parker, 51, both of Nine Mile Falls. Smith, Parker and the 15-year-old unidentified boy were the drivers of each of the three vehicles involved.

Parker was the only one not injured. Smith and five unidentified juveniles were transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The boy, who was driving three other juveniles in a 2002 Toyota Prius, was southbound on Highway 291 near the Stevens and Spokane County line when he crossed over the centerline and struck Parker’s 2004 Saturn Ion, according to WSP.

The Prius then slid into another northbound car, Smith’s 2003 Lexus sport utility vehicle, before spinning and coming to a rest in a ditch.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Charges have not been filed.
