Tennell honored with AFL Reciever of the Year award
Spokane’s Adron Tennell has been named the Arena Football League’s Receiver of the Year.
Tennell led the AFL with 156 receptions and 336 points (49 receiving touchdowns, seven rushing). The Oklahoma product was fourth in the league with 1,792 yards receiving.
San Jose’s Clevan Thomas was named Defensive Back of the Year and Arizona’s Garrett Lindholm was named Kicker of the Year.
Coaches vs. Cancer
Mark and Marcy Few’s 12th annual Coaches vs. Cancer will be held Aug. 23-24. The event has raised over $6 million in the fight against cancer.
Dana Carvey will perform Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. Tickets for Carvey’s show and information on Coaches vs. Cancer can be found at cvcspokane.com.
Swimming
The second annual Coeur d’Alene Crossing, a 2.4-mile open water swim that starts at Arrow Point and concludes at the Hagadone Event Center near the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, will be held Sunday.
Entries and sponsorships are being accepted until Saturday at cdacrossing.com.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Union Gospel Mission, CAST (Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team) and North Idaho College Booster Club.
College football
Whitworth has been selected to finish fourth in the 2013 Northwest Conference according to a preseason poll of the league’s coaches.
Linfied, with five of the seven first-place votes, was picked to repeat as NWC champions.
Volleyball
The Gonzaga women’s team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2013 West Coast Conference by the league’s coaches in a preseason vote.
Also, redshirt sophomore outside hitter Savannah Blinn was selected to the 10-selection preseason All-WCC sqaud.
BYU narrowly edged San Diego as the coaches’ favorite to win the league.
Women’s basketball
All 11 Cougars scored as Washington State beat Hradec Králové 80-66 at Sokolovna in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic Tuesday. The game was WSU’s second of a four-game tour through Austria, Slovakia and Czech Republic.Sophomore Lia Galdeira led all scorers with 17 points.
