Apologized No. 1-ranked female tennis star Serena Williams says she’s reaching out to the family of the victim in the Steubenville, Ohio, rape case after the she was quoted in a Rolling Stone article saying “she shouldn’t have put herself in that position.” In a statement released through her agent Wednesday, Williams says: “What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.” Restored The FA Cup final has been restored to its traditional place as the last match of the English football season. In recent years, the Cup final has had to share the spotlight with Premier League games. The English Football Association said that the final will take place at Wembley Stadium on May 17 – a week after the Premier League season has ended.

Announced The Detroit Red Wings and city officials announced a $650 million plan for a new 18,000-seat arena for the NHL team in Detroit’s downtown entertainment and sports district. The Red Wings say there will be $367 million in private investment and $283 million in public funds in the complex.

Sidelined A sore left elbow will keep Tiger Woods out of competition until the British Open. Woods said on his website that he had his left elbow checked out when he returned home from the U.S. Open at Merion. He said doctors found a strain to his left elbow and advised him to take a few weeks off for rest and treatment. The British Open will be July 18-21 at Muirfield.

Signed The San Francisco 49ers signed defensive end Justin Smith to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the NFL team through the 2015 season.

• The Houston Astros signed right-handed pitcher Mark Appel of Stanford, the No. 1 overall draft pick in the MLB draft earlier this month. Terms were not disclosed ahead of a news conference with Appel.

• The Nashville Predators signed defenseman Victor Bartley to a three-year, $2 million contract. The 25-year-old Bartley made his NHL debut this season and played in 24 games for the Predators.
