Area roundup: WSU wins Clash of the Inland Northwest

Seniors Abby Regan and Ruby Roberts finished 1-2 to lead the Washington State Cougars to victory at the Clash of the Inland Northwest at Mead High School on Saturday.

Regan won the 4,000-meter race in 13 minutes, 34.8 seconds, while Roberts was second in 13:35.5.

WSU swept dual meets with Eastern Washington, Gonzaga and Idaho.

The WSU men also earned sweeps in their dual meets. Richard Shroy was the top Coug finisher, placing fourth over 6,000 meters in 18:15. Gonzaga’s Willie Milam, running unattached, won the race in 18:08.

In the small school portion of the meet, Whitworth’s women beat Whitman, but lost to Lewis-Clark State. The Pirate men dropped both duals.

Kellyn Roiko led the Whitworth women (27th place, 14:59.5), while Chris MacMurray topped the Pirates men (23rd, 19:16).

Women’s soccer

Whitworth Classic: Alyssa Hoffman scored in the 50th minute to lead St. Benedict to a 1-0 win over Whitworth (0-1-1) at the Whitworth Soccer Classic. UC Santa Cruz beat Whitman 2-1 to win the event.

CC Spokane 5, Chemeketa 0: Rashelle Fisher scored two goals and the Sasquatch (3-1, 1-0) romped to a victory over the visiting Storm in a NWAC opener.

Shannon Budworth, Sydni Thomas and Lexi Miller also scored for CCS.

North Idaho 0, Lane 0: North Idaho outshot visiting Lane 18-5 in the scoreless duel.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth 1, Wheaton 0: Sam Engle scored in the 87th minute to lift Whitworth (2-0) to a win over host and 15th-ranked Wheaton in the Bob Baptista Invitational in Wheaton, Illinois.

CC Spokane 2, Chemeketa 1: Devin Leon and Brandon Babinski each scored a goal in the second half to rally the Sasquatch (3-1, 1-0) over the visiting Storm in a NWAC opener.

North Idaho 4, South Puget Sound 0: The Cardinals opened their season and NWAC play with an easy win over the visiting Clippers.

Volleyball

Northwest Challenge: The fourth-ranked Washington Huskies (3-0) were pushed to the limit in Boise before knocking off Gonzaga 3-2 in their first match of the day, then breezed by host Boise State 3-0 in the second match.

Gonzaga (2-1) bounced back to beat Portland State 3-1 in its final match of the tourney. The Bulldogs’ Savannah Blinn was named to the all-tournament team as was Gonzaga setter Lauren Joseph, who totaled 97 assists on the day.

Montana Invitational: The Washington State Cougars (2-1) rallied to beat Cal Poly 3-2 after dropping the first two games of the match in Missoula. Earlier in the day, the Cougs swept host Montana 3-0. WSU’s Jaicee Harris and Chelsey Bettinson were named to the all-tournament team.

Pacific Coast Classic: The Whitworth Pirates (2-2) posted a pair of wins on the final day of the tournament in Claremont, California – beating Chapman 3-0 and host Pomona-Pitzer 3-2.

Active Ankle Challenge: The Idaho Vandals (1-2) defeated Georgia Southern 3-1 in Gainesville, Florida, to pick up their first win of the season.

Mayfaire Classic: The Eastern Washington Eagles (2-1) fell 3-1 to Coastal Carolina on their second day in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Chemeketa Tournament: CC Spokane fell 3-1 to Blue Mountain in the semifinals in Salem, Oregon.

The Sasquatch were to play for third place, but no details were available at press time.
