Boys basketball: Johnathan Lyon’s five 3-pointers helps Newport dispatch Colville
Johnathan Lyon sank five 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a game-high 23 points to lead Newport to a 65-59 win over Colville in a Northeast A League opener Friday night in Colville.
Lyon finished with six 3-pointers.
Colville trailed by 13 points early, but rallied and took a six-point halftime lead.
Lyon’s hot-shooting gave Newport control in the second half.
The Grizzlies (3-1, 1-0) outscored Colville 20-8 in the third quarter and held off a potential Indians’ rally late.
Chase Sandaine tallied a team-high 17 points and Sam Artzis added 13 for Colville (0-2, 0-1), which hung around despite dealing with foul trouble and injuries to three players.
Medical Lake 73, Freeman 64: The Cardinals (2-1, 1-0) jumped ahead early and thwarted the Scotties’ second-half charge in Freeman. Medical Lake’s Tellas Johnson made 11 of 14 shots and finished with a game-high 26 points. Jaelon Stith added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals, who shot 56 percent from the floor. Medical Lake’s 13-point first-half lead was cut to four in the second half, but the Cardinals pulled away late at the free-throw line. Jake Phipps scored 20 points and Ryan Maine added 15 for Freeman (2-2, 0-1).
Lakeside 68, Chewelah 30: Ryan Quigley scored 16 points and Cameron Gay added 12 as the Eagles (3-1, 1-0) opened the game on a 24-4 run and dumped the Cougars (1-4, 0-1) in Nine Mile Falls. Dominique Watson added eight points, six rebounds and three steals for Lakeside, which made 11 of 12 free throws.
Riverside 62, Deer Park 41: Andrew Kramer had 24 points and five rebounds and the Rams (4-0, 1-0) pulled away in the second half and beat the visiting Stags (1-3, 0-1). Riverside outscored DP 21-8 in the final quarter to put the game away. Brandon Morris, who finished with 12 points, hit three 3-pointers in the fourth. Deer Park’s Nate Guske tallied a team-high 18 points.

Wilbur-Creston 51, Springdale 43: Colton Magers scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter and also pulled down 13 rebounds in the Wildcats’ win over the Chargers (2-3, 0-1) in Creston. Nick Densley added six points and 11 rebounds for Wilbur-Creston. The Wildcats (4-0, 1-0) forced several turnovers in the third quarter and outscored Springdale 19-7 to take control.
Reardan 66, Davenport 65: Brandon Reuben scored 14 of his game-high 37 points in the second quarter and the Indians (1-1, 1-0) squeezed past the visiting Gorillas (1-2, 0-1) in a league opener. Dan Peone added 16 points for Reardan. For Davenport, Austin Zeller scored 12 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Northwest Christian 74, Kettle Falls 31: Asher Cox erupted for 29 points and Ryan Ricks added 18 as the Crusaders (3-1, 1-0) grabbed 15 offensive rebounds in an easy win over the host Bulldogs (0-4, 0-1). David Olds hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with nine points for NWC.

Colfax 57, St. George’s 50: Hunter Weitze hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0) came from behind to top the Dragons (3-2, 0-1) in Colfax. Weitze scored eight of his 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter. Keith Gfeller tallied a game-high 18 points for the Bulldogs. Collin Cremers led St. George’s with 15 points.

Cusick 76, Inchelium 42: Alex Bluff led four players in double figures with 24 points and the Panthers (2-2, 1-0) dominated on defense in a win over the host Hornets (1-1, 1-1). Inchelium was held to 28 percent shooting from the field. Cusick’s Cameron Bauer had 14 points, Tyson Shanholtzer added 12 and Antoinne Holmes chipped in 10.
Curlew 77, Northport 44: Coby Grumbach scored 14 of his 16 points in the Cougars’ 30-point third quarter and Curlew (4-0, 1-0) eased past visiting Northport (1-2, 0-2). Aaron McCullough added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars. Northport was led by Vithor Marin, who scored 17, and Breno Santos, who had 11.
Republic 49, Selkirk 45: Aaron Fritts had 17 points and 14 rebounds and Alex Rivera added 10 points as the Tigers (2-0, 1-0) clipped the visiting Rangers (2-1, 0-1). Dominic Cain had 14 points and Jacob Couch added 13 for Selkirk.

Wellpinit 63, Valley Christian 27: Brandon Flett had 10 points and seven assists and McKenna Andrews added eight points and 10 boards as the Redskins (3-0, 1-0) dominated in an easy win over the visiting Panthers (0-4, 0-1). Wellpinit used a full-court pressure defense in the first half to build a big lead. Braydon Oliver scored eight points for Valley Christian.

Post Falls 71, Spanish Springs (Nev.) 50: The Trojans’ pressure defense and depth wore down Spanish Springs in the first half and Post Falls (3-0) eased to a win in Sparks, Nevada. Max McCullough scored 11 points and Blake McLean and Jack Millsap each added 10 for Post Falls, which forced 20 turnovers.
Coeur d’Alene 83, Tumwater 63: Joe Naccarato scored 26 points and Tony Naccarato added 21 as the Vikings (3-2) pulled away late and beat host Tumwater. Brody Lundblad and Colby Daniels added a combined 26 for Coeur d’Alene.
Lake City 55, Sandpoint 41: Jerry Louie-McGee led a balanced attack with 11 points and the Timberwolves (2-2) slowly pulled away from the Bulldogs (1-4) and won in Coeur d’Alene. Sandpoint’s Davin Norris hit eight 3-pointers and scored 24 points.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 69, Odessa-Harrington 42: Cort Ruzicka scored 20 points and Marc Wilbers added 11 as the Broncos (2-1) forced 18 turnovers and raced past the Titans (0-3) in Odessa. Carsen Weber had 20 points for O-H.
