In Brief: Children, 9 and 5, die after falling through ice into pond

Two children died Sunday afternoon after falling through ice covering a pond near Plummer, Idaho, according to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Jose Reyes, 9, and Elena Maravilla, 5, were searching for their dog when they fell into the water.

Their grandmother called 911 for help and then tried to pull the children from the pond along Old Agency Loop Road. The water was about 6 feet deep, according to a news release from the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

The grandmother was treated at a hospital.

“Our hearts go out to the family of these young ones,” Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police Chief Cody SiJohn said.

Mayor, police union reach tentative deal

Spokane Mayor David Condon and police union leaders reached a tentative agreement Monday on a four-year labor contract that includes new provisions on officer oversight.

Officials said details will be announced today.

The Spokane City Council plans to vote on the deal next week.

The council in November rejected an earlier version of the contract with the Spokane Police Guild. Council members argued that the first version did not meet a voter-approved city charter amendment that says the city police ombudsman has the power to investigate alleged police misconduct independently of the police department.

Spokane City Councilman Jon Snyder said the contract will be considered by the City Council before it’s ratified by guild membership.

Girlfriend tells police of burglary suspect

A 21-year-old man implicated in a pair of weekend burglaries at a downtown athletic apparel store was turned in to police by his suspicious girlfriend.

Parish Tate faces a charge of possession of stolen property. Police searched an apartment where the woman said the 21-year-old stashed garbage bags full of shoes and socks thought to have been taken from Sport Town, 511 W. Main Ave., during break-ins Friday and Saturday.

An employee at the shop later confirmed to police the items found at the apartment, valued at more than $1,000, were taken in the burglaries.
