Around the Remote: Fallon steps into spotlight with ‘Tonight Show’ debut

“THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON”: The torch has been passed. Former “Saturday Night Live” funnyman and “Late Night” headliner Jimmy Fallon gets his shot at the big leagues when he succeeds Jay Leno and becomes only the sixth host of NBC’s storied franchise. The other big change? The show jumps coasts to New York City for the first time since Johnny Carson moved it West in 1972. Fallon’s first guests are actor Will Smith and the rock group U2. Midnight Monday, NBC. (The show moves to its regular 11:35 p.m. time slot on Feb. 21.)

SUNDAY: Do boring acceptance speeches sound better in a British accent? “The 2014 EE BAFTA Awards” – the U.K.’s version of the Oscars – are handed out tonight and Stephen Fry serves as our host. 5 p.m., BBC America.
SUNDAY: On “Girls,” the gang heads out for a weekend getaway on Long Island, where Hannah (Lena Dunham) runs into Elijah (Andrew Rannells), her gay ex-boyfriend. Our prediction? Lots of self-involved drama. 10 p.m., HBO.
MONDAY: Dance off! The Winter Olympics continue with what was expected to be one of the hottest rivalries of the Games: The ice dancing competition that pits defending Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada against reigning world champs Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States. 8 p.m., NBC.
MONDAY: Would you allow your daughter to date someone from another planet? The new drama “Star-Crossed” follows a Romeo and Juliet-like romance between a human girl (Aimee Teegarden) and an alien boy (Matt Lanter), amid a great deal of disapproval. 8 p.m., The CW.
TUESDAY: “Generation Like” is an intriguing new installment from “Frontline.” It examines how marketers use social media to build relationships with teenagers, while collecting valuable data in the process. 9 p.m., KSPS; 10 p.m., KCDT.
WEDNESDAY: The latest episode of “Restaurant Takeover” is called “Hillbilly Heaven,” and the key thing you need to know is that the eatery in question has road kill on the menu. Bon appetite! 8 p.m., Food Network.
THURSDAY: Brace yourself for lots of gushing from James Lipton. Tonight’s “Inside the Actor’s Studio” is devoted to Oscar nominee Matthew McConaughey, who just happens to be on the hottest streak of his career. 8 p.m., Bravo.
THURSDAY: On “King of the Nerds,” contestants debate the age-old question: “Star Trek” or “Star Wars”? May the farce be with them. 10 p.m., TBS.
FRIDAY: “Sting: The Last Ship” is the latest offering from “Great Performances.” It has the pop star, backed by a 14-piece band, performing songs from his 2013 album and Broadway-bound musical. 9 p.m., KSPS and KCDT.
SATURDAY: “About a Boy,” a new comedy based on the Nick Hornby novel and Hugh Grant movie, gets a post-Olympics sneak peek tonight. The cast is headed by David Walton, Minnie Driver and Benjamin Stockham, who plays the “boy.” 11:07 p.m., NBC.
