Riverside drops Cougs

UC Riverside worked over four of five Washington State pitchers for 16 hits in posting a 12-7 nonconference baseball victory over the visiting Cougars on Monday.

WSU (1-3) battled back from a 2-0 first-inning deficit to go in front 5-2 midway through the fourth inning, but the Highlanders (3-1) used a three-run fourth to tie the score and a four-run fifth to go ahead for good.

Ian Sagdal drove in two runs for the Cougars.

Francisco Tellez drove in five runs for the Highlanders, three with a fourth-inning homer that tied the game at 5.

• Andrew Sopko of Gonzaga is the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week after the right-hander led the Bulldogs to their first victory, 5-3 over Nebraska.

In collecting his first collegiate win, he pitched seven, four-hit scoreless innings, striking our four and walking two.
