Fifth WAC award for Madison

Men’s basketball: Stephen Madison added to his collection of Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday, raking in the award for the fifth time this season.

The Portland native averaged 27.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 block per game for the Idaho Vandals last week.

Madison celebrated his senior day with 34 points on 12-of-15 shooting (80.0 percent) while making 9 of 10 free throws, leading the Vandals to an 83-77 win over Grand Canyon. Madison scored 21 points with eight rebounds and four assists in a 96-88 nonconference win over Cal State Northridge earlier in the week.

Women’s basketball: Gonzaga jumped two spots to No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday.

The Bulldogs (24-4, 14-2) received 124 points – 31 more points than a week ago. Gonzaga is 28 points ahead of 23rd-place Middle Tennessee State and 41 points behind No. 21 Michigan State.

Connecticut still reigns supreme in the top spot with 900 points, while Notre Dame and Louisville round out the top three.

Last week, the Zags beat Portland 72-61 to clinch at least a share of their 10th-straight West Coast Conference regular-season championship. GU is home to Saint Mary’s Thursday and Pacific on Saturday.
