Phil Hughes pitched eight poised innings in his return to New York and wound up a winner when Minnesota rallied past the Yankees behind big hits from Josh Willingham and Brian Dozier in a six-run ninth. Willingham belted a tying homer on the first pitch from closer David Robertson, denying rookie Chase Whitley his first major league victory. Robertson then walked two batters and gave up Dozier’s two-out double, putting the Twins on top 3-2.

Chris Heisey hit a go-ahead homer in the fifth inning and Cincinnati connected four times in all, beating Arizona in Phoenix. The Reds led 3-0 after homers by Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier in the third and by Ryan Ludwick in the fourth. Arizona tied it with a three-run fourth, then Heisey’s second home run of the season put Cincinnati on top for good.
