Area roundup: UW softball routs Iona in NCAA opener

Kaitlin Inglesby fired a complete-game one-hitter and the eighth-ranked and 12th-seeded Washington Huskies (33-13) exploded for five first-inning runs en route to an 8-0 romp over Iona (24-22) in the first round of an NCAA Regional softball tournament on Thursday in Seattle.

Ali Aguilar’s first career grand slam was the deciding blow in the Huskies’ big first inning.

Washington plays BYU today. BYU beat Northwestern 7-2 Thursday.

Golf

The North Idaho Cardinals men placed 16th in the 22-team NJCAA Championships at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.

Angus Montgomery paced NIC when he finished in a four-way tie for 18th with a three-round 13-over-par 229 total.

• The NIC women finished 14th in the 16-team NJCAA Championships at LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Jennie Williams led NIC with a three-round total of 69-over 285 for 68th place.

Track and field

Eastern Washington Eagles sophomore Jozie Kimes placed sixth in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Outdooor Championships in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Kimes had a personal-best 4,825 points.

• Idaho Vandals runner Hannah Kiser won her second straight 10,000-meter title at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in Orem, Utah.

Kiser clocked in at 36 minutes, 53.96 seconds.

UI’s Cody Heibling placed third in the men’s 10,000 in 33:45.87.
