Chiefs hold off Thunderbirds 2-1

Kailer Yamamoto scored two goals, and Spokane continued its success on the road, holding off Seattle in a Western Hockey League game at Kent, Washington, Friday night.

Yamamoto, a Spokane native who attends Mead High School, scored both of his goals – his fourth and fifth of the season – on power plays, as the Chiefs (10-7-3) improved to 6-2-1 on the road.

Tyson Verhelst picked up his fourth straight win in net, stopping 35 Thunderbirds shots, 17 in the final period.

Seattle (9-11-3) outshot Spokane 18-2 in the third period.

The win was Spokane’s third against Seattle this season, and improves its record to 7-2-2 against U.S. Division foes.

Calvin Spencer scored the lone goal for Seattle.

Dominic Zwerger added two assists for the Chiefs, who play Tri-City in Kennewick tonight.

Tanner Stolz scored twice, Dillon Bogart and Lance Noomen each added two assists, and the Spokane Braves defeated the Columbia Valley Rockies 4-3 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in Invermere, British Columbia. Kurtis Redding added a goal, and two assists for Spokane (26-13-10), which snapped a two-game losing streak.
