Agreed The Chicago White Sox and first baseman Adam LaRoche have agreed to terms on a two-year, $25 million contract. LaRoche is likely to see most of his time at DH because Jose Abreu is entrenched at first and won the Rookie of the Year award. LaRoche hit .259 with 26 homers and 92 RBIs last season for Washington.
Corrected The International Olympic Committee has corrected the standings of the 1964 Winter Olympics pairs competition to show the American sibling team of Vivian Joseph and Ronald Joseph as the bronze medalists. In 1966, the IOC awarded the Josephs the bronze medal after declaring the West German pair Marika Kilius and Hans-Jurgen Bdumler had violated their amateur status by signing a professional contract. But the IOC reinstated Kilius-Baumler in 1987. On Tuesday, it finally listed the Germans as silver medalists along with Canada’s Debbi Wilkes and Guy Revell. The Americans were shown with the bronze.
Achieved Barcelona’s Lionel Messi achieved another scoring milestone when he raised the Champions League goals record to 74 with a hat trick in a 4-0 victory at Apoel, Nicosia. In his 91st game in the elite event, the Argentine bettered the mark of Raul Gonzalez, who scored 71 goals in 142 games for Real Madrid and Schalke.
Died The International Tennis Hall of Fame says Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney, a member of the Hall and the first American woman to win the tournament now known as the Australian Open, has died at age 98.
• Murray Oliver, a five-time All-Star who briefly coached the Minnesota North Stars, has died from a heart attack. He was 77. Oliver played for Detroit, Boston, Toronto and Minnesota in a career that started in 1957 and ended in 1975.
